Job Summary

Bechtel is seeking a Chief Engineer to lead and manage the Architectural department within the Manufacturing & Technology Business Unit (M&T). Core responsibilities include:

  • Plan and conduct independent work to support all business lines requiring judgment in driving technical excellence, evaluating and applying architectural techniques, standards, and criteria.
  • Provide functional oversight to projects, lead technical/project reviews and staffing within appropriate skill sets.
  • Provide leadership in recruiting, training, developing people, and performance assessments.

This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules are determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.

Major Responsibilities
  • Plans, develops, directs, and participates in day-to-day architectural activity on medium to large projects requiring major architectural effort, or multiple smaller projects within a global business unit.
  • Supervises, coordinates, reviews the work of personnel, estimates staffing needs, schedules, and assigns work.
  • Provides technical input to meet procurement requirements.
  • Prepares or oversees discipline estimates and work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget; manages implementation and performance.
  • Maintains coordination with other disciplines to ensure project-wide compliance with Bechtel/client requirements.
  • Reviews and recommends architectural aspects of bid evaluations and awards for approval by project engineering.
  • Coordinates with client representatives to obtain approval of architectural aspects of the work when directed.
  • Reviews and approves key calculations, design documents, supplier drawings and data, materials specifications, drawings, and change orders for the project.
  • Ensures assigned architectural personnel receive on-the-job training for professional development.
  • Prepares project designs and plans using Revit, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Land F/X, Sketch Up, Photoshop, and other design and 3D modeling software.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Requires a bachelor's or master's degree (or international equivalent) in Architecture and 13-15 years of relevant experience, or 17-19 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • In-depth understanding of architectural systems, building materials, and building codes.
  • In-depth understanding of local, state, and federal building codes, safety regulations, and zoning laws.
  • General knowledge of other building construction aspects including structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, civil, landscaping, life safety systems, telecommunications, etc.
  • Experience leading architectural teams on large-scale projects.
  • Preferred experience with design, construction, and commissioning activities and understanding of roles of other departments.
  • Knowledge of data center, industrial or semiconductor project occupancies; familiarity with other engineering disciplines.
  • Knowledge of LEED certification processes and sustainable design principles.
  • Familiarity with environmental impact assessments and compliance procedures.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including IT, facilities management, and operations.
