Position Overview

Northrop Grumman Space Systems invites qualified candidates to join the System Safety Engineering team within the Launch Systems business unit in Chandler, AZ. The role focuses on ensuring safe manufacturing, testing, and operation of complex launch systems.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a small team of System Safety engineers in defining, implementing, and verifying safety requirements to mitigate inherent risks.
  • Apply the systems engineering process to define and verify launch vehicle and ground support equipment requirements, and conduct system safety analyses to architect a safe and robust system.
  • Understand the entire mission—including launch vehicle, payload, ground support equipment, range infrastructure, and safety interfaces.
  • Analyze how components, subsystems, and the integrated launch vehicle function and interact with a focus on System Safety.
  • Interact with key internal and external customers and partners regarding system safety topics.
  • Support launch vehicle design and development to ensure that customer and internal goals for safety, mission success, and performance are met.
  • Analyze and explain launch vehicle designs to external customers, demonstrating compliance with applicable safety requirements for design, build, and test.
  • Interface with customer safety and launch integration personnel and support ground operations and launch mission working groups as requested.
  • Analyze integration and test processes to demonstrate that customer and internal safety and mission success requirements are met at launch sites and at Chandler facilities.
  • Review product systems associated with support equipment and facilities, functional specifications and operations, and establish safety requirements for assigned systems.
  • Independently analyze and recommend safety criteria in design, equipment, and procedures to control or eliminate hazards.
  • Develop safety documents to support customer and test/operational range requirements.
  • Perform audits of operational areas and report on the effectiveness of the system safety program.
  • Participate in accident investigations involving product or facility damage, assisting in cause identification and corrective actions.
  • Evaluate the interrelationship of system safety requirements with concept design and development requirements to ensure a cost‑effective program.

This position is contingent upon capturing program award(s) and obtaining and maintaining associated business and/or customer funding. It also requires obtaining final clearances and program access within a reasonable period as determined by the company. Continued employment is subject to maintaining the required clearance and program access.

Salary

Level3: $89,400 – $134,200
Level4: $111,700 – $167,500

Basic Qualifications – Level3
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline and 5 years of related experience, or a master’s degree and 3 years of related experience, or 1 year of experience with a PhD.
  • Experience with launch vehicle or similar system design, testing, or mission operations.
  • Knowledge of the systems engineering discipline and its application for system safety.
  • Knowledge of RCC‑319, RCC‑324, SSCMAN
    91‑710, and MIL‑STD‑882.
  • Current U.S. Citizen.
  • Active DoD Government Security Clearance.
Basic Qualifications – Level4
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline and 8 years of related experience, or a master’s degree and 6 years of related experience, or 1 year of experience with a PhD.
  • Experience with launch vehicle or similar system design, testing, or mission operations.
  • Knowledge of the systems engineering discipline and its application for system safety.
  • Knowledge of RCC‑319, RCC‑324, SSCMAN
    91‑710, and MIL‑STD‑882.
  • Current U.S. Citizen.
  • Active DoD Government Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 2 years of experience leading small teams.
  • Experience forming and executing schedules and budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex ideas and reach decision milestones.
