Mainframe Systems Programmer

Position Overview

Senior Mainframe/Systems Programmer – 1 position at Chandler, Arizona. Contract length: 12+ months.

Start date:

July 6, 2026. Work arrangement: 3 days onsite in Chandler and 2 days remote. Pay: $70.24 per hour.

• Design, engineer, and maintain z/OS platform tools and services aligned with enterprise architectural, governance, and security standards.
• Provide subject‑matter expertise in z/OS infrastructure, supporting application, infrastructure, and engineering teams with technical consultation and best practices.
• Translate business and operational requirements into z/OS technical designs, deployment blueprints, standards, and runbooks.
• Develop and enhance automation, scripts, and tooling to eliminate manual, repetitive tasks and improve reliability and efficiency.
• Create reusable templates and playbooks to standardize system builds, configuration, deployment, and ongoing operations.
• Evaluate and validate third‑party mainframe software and tools for enterprise adoption, ensuring fit‑for‑purpose and compliance.
• Continuously identify opportunities to improve system performance, resiliency, and operational processes through innovation and modernization.
• Contribute to enterprise product and solution evaluations by defining functional and non‑functional technical requirements.
• Support risk management, change management, and problem resolution in a regulated, high‑availability environment.
• Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and leadership to junior staff while fostering an inclusive, collaborative team culture.

• 10+ years of experience in mainframe systems programming with deep knowledge of IBM z/OS, SMP/E, and Assembly.
• Strong background configuring, maintaining, and supporting the z/OS operating system, including installing new releases, applying maintenance, and managing PTFs, APARs, and USERMODs using SMP/E.
• Proficient in developing and maintaining system utilities, exits, and automation using REXX and Basic Assembly Language (BAL/Assembler).
• Experience administering z/OS UNIX System Services (USS), including file system management, permissions, scripting, and zFS configuration and support.
• Ability to communicate with IBM on System Software topics and manage hardware configuration; familiarity with COBOL is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to stay current with technology and adapt when not recently active in system programming.
• Willingness to relocate to the Chandler area is considered a plus.

This is a contract position based out of Chandler, AZ, with a hybrid work arrangement.
