The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients' medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and helps with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation.
ResponsibilitiesThe RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, which may include activities such as administering medication, checking dosages, avoiding interactions, starting, maintaining, and discontinuing IV lines for fluid, medication, blood, and blood products; administering therapies and treatments; observing the patient and recording observations; and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians.
The RN teaches patients and their families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post‑treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, and exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care and delegates when appropriate.
The RN supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new hire staff and students, assists staff and students to seek and complete tasks required to complete their competency skills, and continues to enhance knowledge in the nursing management and care of patient problems and conditions as required. The RN may continue to improve the patients’ care.
Essential FunctionsPossess knowledge of how to collect health data systematically and prioritize collection based on the patient’s immediate condition or needs involving the family. Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses, use the nursing diagnosis to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate patient plan of care that is family centered, developmentally and age appropriate, and culturally relevant. Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient and specific health problems.
Develop individualized plans of care, implement interventions, initiate treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures. Provide nursing care to meet physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs of the patient and family utilizing a family‑centered approach. Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes, document observations, interventions, therapeutic measures, and other care data in a retrievable form. Provide ongoing evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of the care plan to ensure cost‑effective, high‑quality care.
Evaluate one's own nursing practice relative to professional standards, relevant statutes, regulations, and departmental policies; maintain current nursing knowledge. Systematically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, integrate ethical principles, enhance knowledge of culture and diversity, collaborate with peers and other providers in professional development, model positive relationships, participate in preceptor and mentor programs, and foster an environment for quality practice.
Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care delivery, collaborate with patient, family, and other providers, develop and evaluate standards of care that are evidence‑based, identify changes to nursing practice using an evidence‑based approach, and use research to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.
EducationAll Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have at least 5 years of RN experience (direct or indirect) uired: associate or diploma in nursing. Staff with direct responsibility for care of stroke patients must refer to addendum for stroke‑specific education prior to start.
Required:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Preferred: BSN.
Other: >10 months med‑surg or acute specialty setting.
Required:
1 year RN experience for all float positions.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Required Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Arizona or compact state licensure. Upon hire: national certification for unit‑specific patient population. Preferred: unit‑specific certifications as required by specialty area.
