General Summary
This position is responsible for driving, operating, or controlling various pieces of construction equipment, including but not limited to motor graders, excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, dump trucks, and cargo trucks. Exact duties can depend on a heavy equipment operator’s specialization.
Essential Job Accountabilities- Safely operates heavy equipment in compliance with the company’s operating safety policies and procedures to excavate, move, load and grade earth, rock, gravel, and other materials.
- Provides recommendations for maintaining and improving environmental performance.
- Performs various activities including but not limited to road building, fine grading, finishing, sloping, banking, back filling, ditching, loading, excavating, stockpiling, road surface maintenance, building and maintaining road berms, demolition, trenching, and loading trucks.
- Loads and unloads equipment from vehicles and trailers.
- Ensures company equipment, material, and the work site are maintained, kept clean, and stored in a safe manner.
- Collects and disposes of scrap, excess materials, and refuse.
- Observes distribution of materials to adjust machine settings or material flow and indicates low spots for workers to add materials.
- Ensures operation of equipment is within capabilities and limitations—grease, oil, and repair equipment as necessary.
- Performs required safety inspections and completes documentation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. 2+ years of experience operating heavy construction equipment. Valid driver’s license required; CDL Class A is a bonus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Ability to operate equipment within designated area with attention to detail.
- Ability to travel for up to 2 weeks at a time and work day, night, and weekend shifts.
- Ability to work in constant exposure to outside elements, in all weather conditions.
- Strong understanding of grades and ability to interpret roadway plans and drawings.
- Sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance.
- Ability to judge distances and slopes accurately and make decisions based on verifiable standards.
- Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of machines or vehicle to exact positions.
- Strong knowledge of materials, methods, machines, and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
Requires standing, walking, squatting, bending, climbing ladders, and using hands to operate a computer keyboard. Occasionally lifts or moves up to 50 pounds. Requires close vision and ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
