Role Overview
The Data Center Technician Apprentice is an entry‑level position that works closely with Data Center Technicians to develop and enhance their technical knowledge and skills. The apprentice supports ensuring the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, control and fire life safety systems, while helping maximize customer uptime in a cost‑effective manner.
Key Responsibilities- Operate, monitor, maintain and respond to abnormal conditions in multiple facility systems, including:
- Mechanical
: data center cooling solutions (chilled water systems, HVAC, roof top units, split units, DX compressors, CRAC, CRAH, humidification systems, Kyoto Cooling roof top units if equipped) - Electrical
: critical power distribution from utility/generator to UPS to customer load, including load bank operations - Plumbing
: water supply piping, fixtures, meters, backflow prev enters, water heaters, boilers, fire suppression equipment, drains, sanitary fixtures and roof drain systems - Control
: electrical and mechanical controls, monitoring and alarm systems - Fire Life Safety
: fire, heat and smoke detection, wet and pre‑action sprinkler systems and associated controls
- Mechanical
- Work with contractors and consultants on system expansions, corrections and upgrades.
- Collaborate with CFOps Data Center Technicians on internal maintenance of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, control and fire life safety systems.
- Assist in tracking, documenting and completing preventive and predictive maintenance schedules.
- Analyze existing operating conditions, recommend operational or technological improvements, and drive cost‑reduction initiatives to keep the data center at maximum efficiency.
- Manage data center systems to prevent unplanned, customer‑impacting events.
- Assist with mechanical and electrical loading capacity for data floor and back‑of‑house/hotel loads to optimize power and cooling efficiency.
- Perform data trending and analysis.
- Develop technical writing procedures for preventive or corrective maintenance activities.
- Assist in maintaining client cages on the data floor.
- Order, track and restock facility consumables and parts to maintain cost efficiency.
- Maintain regular, predictable attendance for satisfactory performance.
- Technical abilities relevant to data center operations and cross‑functional thinking.
- Entry‑level knowledge of IT, electrical and mechanical systems used in data centers (distribution, transformers, PLCs, generators, switch gear, UPS, STS, ATS, PDU, chilled water, CRAC/CRAH, pre‑action sprinklers).
- Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25 and relevant fire‑life‑safety codes.
- Familiarity with industrial safety practices (lockout/tag‑out, arc‑flash protection, OSHA, state regulations).
- Proficiency with PC‑based monitoring and control systems; strong computer skills (Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, 365 Copilot).
- Team‑player who thrives in high‑stress, fast‑paced environments and can shift priorities.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations and communicate effectively (verbal, visual, listening).
- Strong problem‑solving skills.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Associate of Science in Technology or equivalent education and/or work experience (desired).
- CPR/First Aid and NFPA 70E certifications may be obtained during apprenticeship.
- OSHA‑approved forklift certification or ability to obtain one during apprenticeship.
- Minimum of two years of relevant experience, professional expertise, or work associated with the operation, maintenance and testing of electrical and/or mechanical systems and equipment.
- Primarily walking, standing and bending with occasional sitting.
- Close visual work on a computer terminal.
- Dexterity in using equipment, keyboards and technical instruments.
- Ability to lift up to 50pounds.
- Data center environment with varying temperatures and loud noises.
- On‑site Monday‑through‑Friday, 8AM to 5PM; telecommuting not permitted.
- Must wear leather closed‑toed boots with a solid rubber sole (company subsidy provided).
