Responsibilities
Kforce has a client in Chandler, AZ that is seeking a Mainframe Utilities Developer to support and enhance batch processing environments on IBM z/OS systems. This role focuses on building, maintaining, and optimizing utility programs and data processing workflows that support critical enterprise applications. The Mainframe Utilities Developer will play a key role in ensuring reliable, high-performance batch execution, efficient data handling, and ongoing production stability in a large-scale mainframe environment.
- Develop and maintain batch processing solutions using COBOL and JCL
- Build and enhance mainframe utility programs for data transformation, file management, and job processing
- Leverage standard utilities such as DFSORT, Syncsort, IDCAMS, IEBGENER, IEBCOPY, and similar tools
- Support and troubleshoot production batch jobs, including job failures, abends, and performance issues
- Design and optimize data processing workflows for large datasets and high-volume environments
- Work with scheduling teams to manage job dependencies, sequencing, and execution flows
- Perform root cause analysis and implement fixes to improve system reliability
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including application developers, DBAs, and operations
- Participate in code deployment, testing, and release processes
- Maintain documentation for batch processes, utilities, and operational procedures
- 5+ years of experience working with IBM mainframe environments (z/OS)
- Experience troubleshooting production issues and batch job failures
- Familiarity with tools such as TSO/ISPF, SDSF, File-AID, or similar
- Experience working with source control tools (Endevor, Change Man, or similar)
- Strong understanding of data processing concepts and file handling
- COBOL and JCL
- Batch processing and job control
- Mainframe utilities (DFSORT, Syncsort, IDCAMS, etc.)
- Experience with database systems such as DB2, IMS, or VSAM
- Exposure to job scheduling tools (CA7, Control‑M, TWS, or similar)
- Experience with automation or scripting (REXX, Python, or Shell)
- Familiarity with modernization efforts or integration with distributed systems
- Experience working in high‑volume, enterprise environments

The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.
