Position Summary
Responsible for performing preventative maintenance, special inspections, and general repairs on tractor and trailer units in accordance with DOT, federal, and state regulations and company standards.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Diesel Truck Mechanic diagnoses and repairs tractors and trailers. Performs annual/systematic 90‑day inspections to ensure equipment meets federal FHWA standards. Assesses and repairs cargo tanks, including internal, external, and upper coupler inspections, heat system inspections, leakage detection, vacuum, pressure tests, and vapor‑tightness tests (EPA Method 27).
Determines overall mechanical condition of tractors, trailers, and associated equipment; diagnoses component malfunctions and initiates repair actions.
Repairs components by replacing worn or damaged parts with new or reconditioned parts. Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub‑assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as brakes, hubs, bearings, seals, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, steering, hydraulics, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
Uses technical publications or automated systems for maintaining vehicles according to manufacturers’ maintenance schedules and for researching parts. Properly annotates all maintenance and labor performed in maintenance management software.
Operates a yard hostler truck to move trailers within the facility yard and shop as needed. Communicates the need to order and receive parts and supplies as required.
Adheres to all established safety (OSHA) and environmental policies and standards, including handling or disposal of hazardous wastes. Keeps work environment clean, organized, and safe. Performs welding repairs as needed. Performs additional duties as assigned.
Reports directly to the Shop Supervisor.
RequirementsEducation and Experience – High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Experienced in the use of inspection and test equipment used for cargo tank inspections.
Essential Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle and equipment theory, principles, and repair related to diesel engines, air, electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to effectively and efficiently inspect tanks and trailers to align with DOT standards (49 CFR HM180.407).
- Knowledge of tractor and trailer maintenance, DOT rules and regulations, company policies and procedures.
- Ability to use vehicle diagnostic software.
Language Skills – Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently.
Physical DemandsUse arms to reach and stretch; hands and fingers to grasp, move, or assemble objects of a variety of sizes. Use legs to stand for long periods, maneuver through shop environment, and perform locomotor functions which may include crawling, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and carrying or relocating objects weighing up to 75 lbs. Perform broad locomotor motions such as bending, twisting, balancing, and reaching, while maintaining postures and stances in a changing work environment.
Visually identify and focus on objects at close and distant ranges, and at central and peripheral locations. Use auditory senses to hear and isolate specific sounds and recognize speech in varying sound levels. Operate under continuous alertness and maintain safety.
Work EnvironmentShop may be susceptible to climate or outdoor weather. Frequent exposure to loud machinery, air tool operation, hammering, and engine noise. Works in confined spaces. No travel required.
