Millennium Space Systems, a part of Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS), is a fast, agile small satellite company focused on national security space. Our missions have direct impact to global security, such as missile warning and Earth observation.

Job Summary

As a Mission Operations Engineer, you will be the lead technical authority for Millennium’s on‑orbit spacecraft. You will oversee the entire mission life cycle—from proposal to spacecraft and mission design, through space vehicle integration and test, culminating with launch and on‑orbit operations. Your responsibilities include defining operational concepts, developing on‑orbit procedures, innovating advanced spacecraft operation methods, and responding to anomalous scenarios in real time.

Position

Responsibilities
  • Support a team of spacecraft and subsystem engineers during launch and early orbit activities to commission the space vehicle(s) for service.
  • Serve as technical authority during mission operations for both the space and ground segments.
  • Support every stage of the mission lifecycle, including proposal, design, integration, test, shipment, launch, on‑orbit operations, and decommissioning.
  • Assist with ground and mission operations requirements, and flow mission requirements back to the space vehicle team.
  • Develop mission concept of operation and design reference missions.
  • Document lessons learned from on‑orbit exercises to aid future vehicle designs.
  • Support ground segment design, including command and control, mission planning, data processing, and related infrastructure.
  • Implement and test vehicle fault and autonomy solutions (fault detection, response, autonomous behavior, on‑board command and control).
  • Implement operational automation to reduce day‑to‑day operator responsibilities.
  • Assist in creating and executing vehicle simulator tests to validate mission/fault/autonomy design.
  • Assist in creating and executing in‑factory flight vehicle tests to validate mission design compatibility with flight hardware.
  • Conduct critical ground segment testing, including radio‑frequency compatibility, remote ground facility interface, and critical ground asset acceptance testing.
  • Provide anomaly response support during off‑nominal vehicle conditions.
  • Contribute to customer briefings and debriefings for orbital events.
  • Assist with mission “sequence of events” for bus commissioning, payload checkout/calibration, and mission operations.
  • Participate in mission rehearsal events to train the mission team and validate the mission design.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or STEM‑related field.
  • Experience with real‑time satellite command and control operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of satellite subsystems, ground systems, space missions, and CONOPS design.
  • Willingness to support 24/7 operations and occasional off‑nominal working hours during critical mission periods.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance; post‑start U.S. TS/SCI clearance required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Level 2:
    Two (2) or more years of related work experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • M.S. in STEM‑related field.
  • Extended knowledge of satellite systems engineering, including all subsystems (Guidance, Navigation, and Control; Electrical Power; Thermal Control; Telemetry, Tracking, and Command; Propulsion, etc.).
  • Experience with spacecraft command & control software systems.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams to resolve anomalous scenarios.
  • Familiarity with software and scripting tools such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Java.

Pay Range

Level 1: $66,

Level 2: $82,

Security Clearance

Requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants must be eligible for and obtain a U.S. Top Secret/SCI clearance post‑start.
