Position Overview

Financial Analyst – assists the Senior Director, Finance and Administration in managing financial resources, ensuring compliance with state and university policies, and supporting budget development processes.

Location:

Fairfax, VA.

Work Schedule:

Full-time (40 hours/week). Workplace:
Hybrid Eligible.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in generation of monthly financial reports for the College and individual departments and programs.
  • Perform ad hoc financial analysis as needed.
  • Prepare annual financial statements and budgets.
  • Track enrollment and revenue income from new budget model and other revenues.
  • Track instructional costs and faculty teaching loads in annual statements.
  • Monitor operating budget usage and project usage during the fiscal year.
  • Prepare budget development templates and load budgets into the university system.
  • Ensure financial activity meets planned expenditures and policy compliance.
  • Support tracking of manual budgets such as startup obligations, space cost distribution, building projects, new programs, foundation budgets.
  • Assist with other duties to ensure efficient fiscal operations.
  • Process personnel and financial transactions, including journal vouchers, scholarships, grants, labor distributions, etc., ensuring proper account alignment.
  • Submit position maintenance, control, and labor distribution forms; reconcile payments to correct orgs.
  • Ensure grant labor aligns with grant budgets monthly.
  • Complete reconciliations for assigned orgs and funds monthly, taking corrective actions promptly.
  • Work with team members to ensure revenue, labor, and expense reconciliations are completed timely and accurately.
  • Manage reporting assignments: AACSB surveys, HR/fiscal audits, OIEP census audits, instructional cost reporting, and other requested reports.
  • Provide leadership reports for strategic planning and accreditation.
  • Execute special projects assigned by the Senior Director.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with financial processes: purchase requisitions, journal vouchers, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in producing financial reports and analyzing financial results.
  • Experience with large data sets and ad hoc financial analysis.
  • Knowledge of Mason fiscal systems:
    Banner, Micro Strategy, eVA, Foundation Reporting System, Mason Finance Gateway, and Ramp.
  • Experience with grant post‑award reporting and reconciliation.
  • Experience with budget reconciliations.
  • Experience with foundation reporting.
  • Experience processing scholarships.

    Knowledge of fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Strong organizational and financial analysis skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in a professional environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast‑pace environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, especially advanced Excel.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to quickly learn and use new software and systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in accounting principles, financial analysis, and budgeting.
  • Experience developing annual budgets and quarterly forecasts for complex organizations.
  • Experience with Costello College of Business fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of university or college budgeting and financial management systems.
