Specimen Technician I

The Specimen Technician I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department, including specimen handling, data entry, and laboratory support activities. The role requires strong attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to work in a fast-paced production and biohazard laboratory environment while maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

No prior experience required; however, laboratory or medical background preferred. Experience in data entry or production environments preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and clinical laboratory processes preferred. Hospital or clinical laboratory experience is a plus.

Perform general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. Perform data entry with high accuracy and speed. Handle specimen processing tasks including presort, A-station, pickup, and delivery of specimens to the laboratory. Perform imaging, microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting of specimens. Ensure all tasks are completed with accuracy, confidence, and timeliness. Learn and identify specimen types based on test requirements. Follow compliance regulations related to test ordering and laboratory procedures.

Maintain productivity and quality standards in a production environment. Work in a biohazard environment following strict safety protocols. Maintain clean and organized work areas. Communicate effectively with team members and other departments. Adapt to changing priorities, schedules, and operational demands. Support night shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call requirements as needed.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume production environment. Strong organizational and multitasking skills. Flexibility to adapt to changing procedures and priorities. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to follow safety and compliance protocols.

Data entry with high-speed accuracy (6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes/hour preferred). Basic computer skills. Specimen handling and processing. Knowledge of laboratory terminology (preferred). Production environment workflow management. Safety and biohazard compliance.

High School Diploma or equivalent required.
