Job Title and Location
Medical Laboratory Scientist I – Chantilly, VA
Shift DetailsNight Shift: Tuesday to Saturday, 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM
DepartmentClinical Laboratory – Microbio General
Pay and BenefitsPay range: $32.52+ per hour. Eligible for a 10% shift differential on second‑shift hours and a 15% differential on third‑shift hours. Annual performance bonus compensation may also be offered.

- Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring independent judgment and responsibility in qualified specialties.
- Demonstrate proficiency in all testing areas and troubleshoot applicable instruments/procedures.
- Support quality control, complex problem troubleshooting, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and special projects.
- Perform and report assigned analytical tests per SOP, ensuring quality control requirements are met.
- Maintain compliance with lab policies and procedures for specimen handling, processing, analysis, reporting, and record keeping.
- Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround times, including STATS or critical results to clients.
- Ensure reagent/test kit dates, expiration and, if applicable, opened dates are recorded.
- Document quality control analysis and make disposition decisions for assays or tests.
- Report problems with test procedures to supervisory personnel and cooperate with investigations.
- Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for physician reporting.
- Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition.
- Complete training and competency checklists as required.
- Assist supervisor with training of other laboratory personnel.
- Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements.
- Use personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and work‑practice controls as directed.
- Answer client or lab personnel questions where applicable.
- Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections when needed.
- Assume lead responsibilities when a supervisor is absent, if qualified and delegated.
- Perform other duties as assigned; this list is not exhaustive.
- Education (Required): BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology, or qualification as a Technologist under 42 CFR § 493.1489.
- Foreign‑educated candidates must provide a credential evaluation from NACES or AICE.
- Work Experience (Required): At least 1 year of laboratory experience and/or training in high‑complexity testing within the specialties/sub‑specialties for this position.
- Physical and Mental Requirements: Ability to stand and work at the bench for extended periods; ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds per guidelines; frequent walking and/or standing; dexterity for use of pipettes and lab instruments.
- Work Environment: Handle biological samples and potentially hazardous chemicals.
- Knowledge: Theoretical and operational knowledge in designated specialty; knowledge of department policies and procedures.
- Skills: Problem‑solving, detail orientation, independent work with prioritization, effective interpersonal and client communication, confidentiality, proficiency in Microsoft Office and Laboratory Information Systems, and stress management.
