About the DepartmentThe purpose of Auxiliary and Business Services (ABS) is to improve the quality of campus life for students, faculty, staff, and the community. About the PositionThe primary purpose of the Access Control and IT Technician is to provide maintenance to the university’s CCTV equipment and access control hardware to ensure proper operation of all components of the systems are functional (including door contacts, request to exit devices, readers, the actual lock, power supplies, encoders, network connections, and cameras). This also includes maintenance of network connectivity and software settings for all connected hardware, ensuring proper documentation of work completed and inventory used.
Responsibilities- Repairs and installs access control, alarm, and CCTV systems, including providing and coordinating repairs and maintenance of technical equipment; troubleshooting and providing end‑user technical support; performing timely installations of university card access, alarm, and CCTV system installations including running, pulling, terminating, and splicing cable, as well as mounting system control panels and related components, both mechanical and electronic; and training peers and colleagues as directed by the supervisor.
- Serves as commissioning agent of large contract installs and provides oversight for contractors, ensuring continuity and accuracy of contracted access control installs; maintaining appropriate records and details of work done and time spent in the appropriate work order system.
- Handles customer service issues and manages requests and inquiries for technical services, conducting all work in a timely manner in accordance with established George Mason University Access Control standards and policies with a focus on accuracy, customer service, and maintaining security; reviewing and maintaining a working knowledge of all department policies, laws, and university policies pertaining to all relevant access control, alarm, and CCTV usage and installation best practices and policies;
following standard operating procedures and other department, university, and state policies; complying with state, university, and department leave policies; and demonstrating punctuality and reporting on time for all work‑related functions to include training, meetings, and other duties. - Plans, schedules, and prioritizes tasks and assignments, planning, scheduling, assigning, and prioritizing projects and assignments in consultation with the Physical Security IT Manager or designee; effectively communicating status of assignments to appropriate personnel, working cooperatively to schedule projects and assignments in accordance with established procedures and special operational priorities; instructing staff in work procedures; evaluating products and services and providing recommendations on available technology to best serve the customer or department;
and coordinating projects as assigned related to acquisition and integration of software programs and technical equipment. - Patches and services network connected systems and ensures continuity of service, maintaining a working relationship with university information technology personnel; providing end‑user technical support to troubleshoot and rectify issues when requested; and performing other related duties as assigned.
