A Milling Machine Operator is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that works on construction projects, performing a wide variety of tasks and transferring from one task to another as the workflow dictates.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operate a milling machine while maintaining the depth of cut and cross slope specified in project contracts.
- Remove existing asphalt pavement by milling to improve rideability and cross slope, lower finished grade adjacent to curb for resurfacing, or entirely remove pavement.
- Follow plans to achieve the average depth of cut and automate grade control systems while controlling transverse slope and longitudinal profile to produce specified results.
- Control dust during removal operations.
- Use alternate removal and crushing equipment if required.
- Understand basic survey nomenclature and judge distance and slopes accurately.
- Make decisions based on verifiable standards.
- Remove raised reflective pavement markers before milling.
- Milling cross slope, remove pavement to the depth specified in plans, using string line for alignment.
- Take measurements of cross slope as needed.
- Understand production and quantity requirements.
- Utilize automatic grade control system.
- Schedule work while maintaining production.
- Haul and stockpile or otherwise dispose of milled material as instructed.
- Lead and delegate work within scope.
- Train other crew members.
- Perform daily maintenance of equipment to keep it in safe condition; notify supervisor if repair needed.
- Perform incidental work items within other crafts.

Education and Experience- Demonstrable previous experience as a Milling Machine Operator (not an entry-level position).
- Three to five years or more of industry-related experience, with an emphasis on roads, highways, and bridges.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Ability to understand work directions and communicate effectively with supervisors and peers.
- Constant physical effort, including standing for at least eight hours per day; may stoop, bend, and crouch as required.
- Lift and carry at least 50–90 pounds personally and up to 150 pounds with assistance, frequently.
- Maintain alertness to multiple concurrent activities at construction sites.
- Walk on uneven surfaces in varying weather.
- Provide direction and flagging for crane operators up to 300 tons.
- Climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Employees may be exposed to high levels of noise, grease, dust, and hazardous substances such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and ready-mixed concrete.
- Regular work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
- Assess work environment for possible hazards and ensure training is adequate.
- Use proper personal protective equipment and tools appropriately.
- Speak up if seeing an unsafe act.
- Identify and file near-miss reports.
- Ask for help when needed to perform tasks safely.
- Consider safer ways to perform work and communicate them.
