Position Overview
Work Shift:
T‑S 12am - 8:30pm
Target Pay: $23.80 an hour
Purpose of JobThe Parasitology Laboratory Technician performs laboratory analyses and tests, prepares samples, sets up instruments, runs tests, and reads, interprets, and releases results.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Set up, run, read, and release lab tests.
- Meet all minimum department requirements for Parasite and Giardia reading/releasing rates.
- Exercise judgment in evaluating and reporting results.
- Perform equipment maintenance activities.
- Maintain awareness of quality control and calibration.
- Assist lead or supervisor with rechecks as directed.
- Follow applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including safety and quality procedures.
- Maintain clean and organized work area.
- Restock supplies as needed.
- May be cross‑trained to perform other duties, such as less complex tests, including duties performed by Para Aide.
- Participate in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.
- Consult with senior peers on non‑complex parasitology tasks to learn through experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Science degree or veterinary technician experience preferred.
- Prior laboratory experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Laboratory skills with experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments.
- Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology, parasitology procedures, equipment, and familiarity with a microscope.
- General science background.
- Attention to detail and organized with ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate information so others will understand and to exchange accurate information.
- Positive, can‑do attitude.
- General computer skills.
Stationary position required for up to 2 hours. Operate a computer and other lab equipment accurately and efficiently. Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch. May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs. Perform heavy microscopic work and observe details at close range. Proficiency in English is required for team meetings, data entry, and written directions.
Extended hours may be needed. Laboratory environments may present biohazards mitigated by mandatory PPE. Work under close to moderate supervision. Potential exposure to zoonotic agents and hazardous chemicals requires compliance with National Hazard Communication Standards.
