Responsibilities
  • Under limited supervision, performs installation, modification, maintenance, and repair work on University plumbing, irrigation, and gas systems and equipment;
  • Performs skilled journey-level work to diagnose defects and to install, repair, and maintain piping systems and fixtures for water, sewer, or natural gas with a high degree of quality and efficiency;
  • Tests, repairs, and maintains cross-connection devices and pressure vessel safety devices;
  • Performs routine, recurring preventive maintenance activities without direction or oversight and within established schedules;
  • Cuts, threads pipe, and makes proper connections;
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces valves, controls, traps, tanks, etc.;
  • Repairs and replaces motors, pumps, expansion tanks, and irrigation systems;
  • Tests, installs, and maintains gas piping and equipment;
  • Maintains wastewater management systems; installs and/or replaces fixtures; performs work on site or in a shop;
  • Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps the vehicles supplied with tools and materials, and keeps it maintained and in an orderly, clean condition;
  • Performs miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting equipment and mechanical areas;
  • Picks up materials from suppliers when requested;
  • Inspects areas and reports problems to the supervisor;
  • Maintains paperwork and electronic communication, including work orders and recording time;
  • Orders and includes materials on work orders in an expedient manner;
  • Follows established university and departmental policies and procedures;
  • Follows established safety procedures and reports accidents and problems to the supervisor promptly;
  • Performs assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the plumbing trade;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Completion of, or ongoing participation and/or completion of courses in vocational or technology education;
  • DPOR Backflow Prevention Device Worker certification or the ability to obtain the certification;
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 4+ years) in the plumbing trade;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the plumbing trade;
  • Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions;
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national plumbing codes;
  • Ability to use necessary hand and power tools and testing equipment;
  • Ability to analyze plumbing systems and controls to determine problems and initiate repairs as directed by the supervisor;
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)./
Preferred Qualifications
  • Journeyman Plumber license or equivalent experience;
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 5+ years) in commercial plumbing work.
