Lead Data Center Technician
Sterling, VA
Schedule/Shift: Monday-Friday, Day Shift
Pay: $28.00-$32.00 per hour
The Lead Data Center Technician is responsible for leading crews and performing structured cabling, fiber optic, and low-voltage infrastructure installations for large-scale commercial and data center construction projects. This role performs hands-on technical work including fiber splicing, cable and fiber termination, testing, troubleshooting, pathway installation, rack buildouts, and equipment installation while overseeing crews of 10 or more technicians. The Lead Data Center Technician coordinates labor, materials, safety activities, quality control, blueprint changes, and project requirements to support timely and accurate installations.
The ideal candidate has extensive commercial and data center construction experience, strong fiber and structured cabling expertise, and demonstrated project leadership skills.
- Lead crews of 10 or more technicians on large-scale commercial and data center construction projects.
- Perform cable infrastructure and fiber rough-in installations.
- Install, dress, label, terminate, and test copper and fiber cabling.
- Perform ribbon and fusion fiber splicing using appropriate splicing equipment.
- Install and configure single-mode and multimode fiber and connectors, including ST, LC, SC, and SC-APC.
- Perform Fluke and OTDR testing and troubleshoot fiber and structured cabling systems.
- Terminate and test Cat cabling and verify installations meet project and quality requirements.
- Rack and stack equipment and complete server rack buildouts and rack elevations.
- Install fiber trays, ladder racks, power trays, cabinets, cable management systems, and related pathways.
- Perform outside plant (OSP) fiber installation into data center facilities.
- Complete panel buildouts and related low-voltage infrastructure installations.
- Perform quality control inspections and troubleshoot cabling and infrastructure installations.
- Read, interpret, and follow blueprints, drawings, and project specifications.
- Coordinate blueprint revisions and submit change-order information to the Project Manager.
- Receive materials, assemble hardware, and order materials as needed.
- Forecast labor requirements and coordinate workforce needs for assigned projects.
- Coordinate professionally with general contractors, clients, project management, and field personnel.
- Conduct safety meetings and enforce applicable jobsite safety procedures.
- Follow OSHA requirements, use appropriate PPE, and maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- 5+ years of data center technician experience.
- 5+ years of fiber optic installation experience.
- Experience in low-voltage commercial construction and data center new construction environments.
- Demonstrated experience leading crews of 10 or more technicians and running projects.
- Hands-on experience with fiber splicing, including ribbon and fusion splicing.
- Experience terminating and testing Cat cabling and fiber optic cabling.
- Experience with panel buildouts, pathway installation, and structured cabling infrastructure.
- Experience using Fluke and OTDR testing equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, and project specifications.
- Experience coordinating with general contractors, clients, and project management teams.
- OSHA 10 certification preferred.
- Ability to work from ladders and scissor lifts and perform work in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move materials or equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand and work on your feet for the duration of the shift.
- Must have basic hand tools, including a multi-bit screwdriver, tape measure, snips, needle-nose pliers, channel-lock pliers, punch-down tool, flashlight, tool pouch, gloves, and steel-toe or composite-toe work boots.
