Essential Functions:

- Maintain close communications with the bus driver as it relates to students’ needs.
- Assist in communicating student needs to appropriate school and transportation personnel.
- Possess knowledge of individual student needs, their behavior plans, and medical needs for the purpose of ensuring their safe transportation.
- Monitor students until released to the teacher, instructional assistant, or parent for the purpose of ensuring student safety.
- Assist the bus driver and school personnel in the safe loading and unloading of students; working knowledge of how the wheelchair lift works in both the normal operation and manual operation.
- Understand the basic operation of the bus, such as applying the parking brake, turning on the warning lights, and how the transmission and engine ignition works.
- Collaborate with the bus driver in student seating arrangements.
- Apply and secure proper physical restraints apparatus/equipment when necessary for the purpose of protecting the students as indicated by the student’s IEP.
- Provide supervision of students during transport to and from school, to include appropriate student behavior and language, ensuring the safety of the students and assisting the driver to safely drive the bus.
- Maintain knowledge of current bus routes for the purpose of assisting substitutes with directions as needed.
- Exhibit appropriate role model behavior at all times through dress, language, personal hygiene, behavior, and attitude.
- Attend transportation meetings, in‑service training, and workshops for the purpose of gathering information to effectively and efficiently perform the job requirements.
Knowledge and Skills Needed:
- Knowledge of the basic operation of the bus, wheelchair lift, and seat restraints.
- Ability to lift and/or carry 40‑60 lbs., walk, bend, stoop, and reach overhead; agility to push, pull, squat, twist, and turn; walk on uneven terrain, school grounds, and climb in and out of school buses safely and quickly.
- Ability to assist, and if necessary, carry special‑needs students out of school buses in cases of emergency.
- Ability to sit/ride in a school, meeting room, or conference room for varying amounts of time.
- Ability to speak audibly and write legibly so others may hear, read, and understand under normal conditions.
- Interaction with Others: communicate clearly, develop positive interpersonal skills, demonstrate sensitivity among diverse populations.
- Concentration: maintain workflow in a variety of environments and situations, manage multiple tasks.
- Stressful Circumstances: produce quality work when short or unexpected deadlines are given, maintain composure in challenging situations.
