Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill established what was possibly the first residential summer school in America in 1877. The University has continued to provide a wide offering of annual summer academic opportunities to its students, the people of North Carolina, and other residents in this country and abroad. Currently, more than 50 departments or curricula of the College of Arts and Sciences and seven professional schools in Academic Affairs offer a varied array of summer classes, including field courses, research courses, and graduate-level labs.

Summer School is an important part of the Undergraduate Education Division and will be supporting the division for academic year-round online and hybrid courses.

Position Summary

The Instructional Designer will be responsible for developing, facilitating, and supporting initiatives that advance the Summer School's mission to foster instructional innovation and excellence. This position plays a central role in preparing instructors to deliver high-quality remote and compressed-format courses by designing training experiences, providing individualized support, and offering professional development opportunities throughout the year.

Key areas of responsibility include developing, revising, and facilitating annual online instructor trainings, supporting instructors through structured feedback and consultations, hosting regular professional development workshops, and participating in university-wide initiatives focused on encouraging pedagogical excellence in online course formats. This position will manage evaluation processes related to trainings and other initiatives in order to assess progress on key performance indicators of effectiveness and help promote continuous improvement.

The instructional designer will also work with stakeholders in the Summer School and throughout the university to develop training, documentation, and other support for online instructors and students. By ensuring instructors are well-prepared and supported, the Instructional Designer contributes directly to the quality and success of Summer School courses and the overall student learning experience at UNC.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to consulting or developing course content, curriculum, instructional technique/technology, distance education design, development or implementation, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience

The selected candidate will demonstrate:

* Strong understanding of instructional design principles, particularly for online and compressed-format courses.

* Strong written and verbal communication

* Capacity to work independently while collaborating effectively with academic staff and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience

* Master's degree in a related field or at least 5 years' equivalent experience in an instructional design role.

* Experience supporting instructors and learners in higher education.

* Experience designing and facilitating online training or professional development.

* Experience designing online courses in multiple formats, including synchronous, asynchronous, hybrid, and HyFlex.

* Familiarity with best practices in online pedagogy and faculty professional development.

* Experience facilitating group workshops and individual consultations.

* Experience in providing multiple training workshops and consultations with overlapping timelines.

* Proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard) and related educational technologies.
