About the School of Government

The UNC‑Chapel Hill School of Government is the largest university‑based local government training, advisory, and research organization in the United States. It offers more than 200 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences for over 12,000 public officials each year, and hosts a nationally ranked Master of Public Administration program. The School also supports entrepreneurial initiatives in public leadership, judicial education, technology, environmental finance, and development finance.

Position

Summary

The School of Government seeks a tenure‑track assistant professor of public law and government to specialize in family law. The faculty member will serve as the School’s point person on family law issues for state district court judges, advising and teaching district court judges, magistrates, clerks of superior court, and other judicial personnel. Areas of specialization include child custody and child support, divorce, alimony, equitable distribution, spousal contracts, contempt, civil domestic violence protective orders, and civil no‑contact orders of protection.

In collaboration with colleagues, the faculty member will create, administer, and teach courses through the North Carolina Judicial College and develop orientation programs and conferences in partnership with the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts. The faculty member will also engage in research and writing in the substantive areas mentioned above and will be responsible for the regular update and revision of The North Carolina Trial Judges’ Bench Book, Family Law Edition.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: JD, strong academic performance, and a demonstrated commitment to public service required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: At least three years of experience in family law is preferred.
