Job DescriptionAt CHCCS, a Multilingual Learner (MLL) teacher’s goal is to provide students with the help, counsel, and learning experience they need to make progress toward educational goals established, to create a flexible instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth, and to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to live a rewarding life in an ever-changing world.
MLL teachers instruct students whose dominant language is a language other than English. The goal is to teach the NC English Language Proficiency Standard Course of Study. MLL teachers instruct English language learners to read, speak, listen, and write English, so they can achieve grade level proficiency in all academic areas. MLL teachers must be highly knowledgeable in the content and structure of the English language as well as the methodology for teaching English to non-native speakers.
EssentialDuties
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials
- Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each student’s needs
- Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals
- Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate these objectives to the students
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media
- Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports
- Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and interpret the school program
- Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and through self-selected professional growth activities
- Participate in curriculum development programs as required
- Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
- Instruct pupils in a classroom, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities
- Translate lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
- Coordinate and administer the WIDA Screener and ACCESS 2.0 English language tests
- Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor
- Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
- Hold or be eligible to hold a N.C. teaching license; must have ESL licensure area
- Certification in additional core content licensure areas preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Prior teaching experience preferred
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
