In partnership with Durham Tech Early Childhood Apprentice Program, and under the supervision of the Youth Program Director, the Group Counselor Apprentice is responsible for leading, developing, and building relationships with the youth participants in the program.

Theyare responsible for managing these functions in accordance withthe stated mission, goals, and policiesestablishedby the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.

Job Schedulo:
Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Program sites include Central, Efland, Grady, Hillsborough, New Hope, Pathways and River Park Elementary schools.

• Supervises and builds relationships witha group of elementary and/or middle school students.
• Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentallyappropriateandconsistent with YMCA values.
• Creates an atmosphere that is fun, safe,friendly and challenging.
• Mentors and models responsible behavior while leading children inthe program.
• Models andfacilitatesrelationship-building skills in all interactions and maintains positive relationships with campers, parents, schoolstaffand other YMCA staff.
• Adheres toYMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abusepreventionand emergency management.
• Ensures that space and equipment used for the program is taken care of andleft in good, clean condition daily.
• Attends staff meetings andtrainings.
• Develops andmaintainscollaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication withinareaof responsibility.

• At least 18years of age.
• High School/GEDrequiredwithpreviousexperience working with children.
• Mustbe currently enrolled in Durham Tech’s Apprenticeship program and selected toparticipatebycollege administration guidelines.
• Must obtain BSAC Certification prior tohire.
  
  Other specific certifications and/or training may be required.
• Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor education, planning and organizing activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports, recreational games,etc.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
• Multi-lingualdesired but not required.

• Primarily office and program settings with frequent interaction in gyms, classrooms, and outdoor spaces.
• Moderate noise levels;may be louder during youth or community activities.
• Regular use of computer,phone, and other office technology.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching; occasional lifting or moving up to 40lbs
• Some work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Flexible schedule required— may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional travel between branches or sites.
• Must be able to provide valid identification for employment eligibility verification.
• Mustresidein the YMCA of the Triangle service area (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and surrounding areas).
