Purpose of Organizational Unit:
Established in 1936, we are the second oldest theatre department in the country. Our faculty members are both scholars and artists, teachers and practitioners, constantly moving back and forth between the classroom and the theatre. Play Makers Repertory Company (LORT D theatre) is embedded within the Department and the symbiotic relationship, between the Department of Dramatic Art and Play Makers Repertory Company, builds upon a more than one-hundred-year legacy.
The Joan H. Gillings Center for Dramatic Art is the crucible where students transform learning into practice every day. Our mission is to educate students to think critically and write cogently about the creative and artistic processes of theatre, its literature, and its history.
The Department of Dramatic Art at UNC-Chapel Hill invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor in Costume Technology (non-tenure track, fixed-term). The successful candidate will teach a 3/3 load (six courses annually), with primary responsibility for teaching draping and pattern making, and lab courses in our MFA Costume Production program. This position will mentor the MFA students, support Play Makers during production hours in the costume shop (DRAM 790-796), act as a liaison for KTC student designers as well as teach one undergraduate course to be determined by the MFA program Head and Chair.
In addition to teaching, the candidate may have the opportunity to work with Play Makers Repertory company and/or the Kenan Theatre Company in your area of specialization.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Applicants must hold a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Costume Production or related discipline and have at least three years of teaching experience at the university, college, or professional level. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in costume production and related practices, along with strong skills in communication, collaboration, and mentoring.
Preferred Qualifications , Competencies, andExperience:
Experience with CLO3D pattern making software, tailoring, or digital embroidery are a plus.
