Nursing Assistant II – Neuro​/ENT Care Unit; Per Diem

Job Description

We are seeking a Nursing Assistant II for the new Intermediate Neurosciences and Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery (ENT) Unit at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC.

This is an at‑will, Per Diem position that requires a minimum of 24 hours of work per month. Shifts are rotating 12‑hour days (7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.) and nights (7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m.) with weekend and holiday rotation. The unit will open in Summer 2026.

• Provide direct patient care as outlined in the plan of care, including bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation assistance, and vital sign measurement.
• Perform specimen collection, skin prep, catheter care, capillary glucose checks, wound care, range‑of‑motion exercises, postural drainage, and oxygen room setup.
• Conduct oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal suctioning, tracheostomy care, fecal impaction removal, and sterile dressing changes for wounds up to 48 hours old.
• Assist with IV fluid assembly and monitoring, IV site care, and discontinuation of peripheral IVs.
• Support ostomy irrigation, urinary catheterization, and oro‑, naso‑, and gastrostomy tube feedings.
• Maintain a clean work area, manage office equipment, troubleshoot software/hardware issues, restock supplies, and transport patients, specimens, and supplies.
• Assist physicians and other health‑care providers with routine examinations, procedures, and procurement of equipment and supplies.
• Reinforce teaching provided by the registered nurse or physician, documenting patient understanding, and distribute patient education materials.
• Provide administrative support, including PI audits and data entry.

• High School diploma or General Education Development (GED).
• Prefer six (6) months of nursing assistant experience.

• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant II with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

• Fluency in verbal and written English.
• Basic computer skills.
