Now a Specialized Cardiology Unit at UNC Medical Center

UNC Medical Center is excited to announce the transformation of 7 Bedtower from a General Medicine unit into a specialized Cardiology Unit launching this July. This is a rare opportunity for experienced nurses who are passionate about cardiac care and want to play an active role in shaping a newly designed, high‑impact clinical environment.

As part of this transition, you'll join a collaborative, forward‑thinking team dedicated to delivering exceptional cardiovascular care. You'll also have the unique opportunity to help influence unit workflows, clinical practices, and culture building a best‑in‑class cardiac nursing unit from the ground up.

Unit Overview
  • 20‑bed unit with a mix of step‑down and acute care beds
  • Patient population diagnoses include myocardial infarction, heart failure, and arrhythmia
  • Care includes pre and post cardiac catheterization & electrophysiology procedures (pacemakers, implantable cardioverter‑defibrillator placements, ablations)
Schedule Expectations
  • 2 12‑hour shifts
  • Flexible self‑scheduling
Preferred Experience
  • Cardiac and/or Step Down nursing experience
Summary

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities
  • Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs, attends education programs, uses patient education materials, and assesses readiness to learn of patients/families/caregivers.
  • Identifies expected patient outcomes, seeks guidance in revision of plan of care, participates in interdisciplinary discussions, and communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
  • Demonstrates competence in care of patients with complex problems, performs bedside point‑of‑care testing, utilizes nursing standards, and prioritizes care according to patient/family needs.
  • Develops goals for professional growth, participates in unit goals and performance improvement, uses communication systems, promotes cost‑effective care, gives feedback to co‑workers, and promotes a safe, clean, secure environment.
  • Recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care, includes physical, psychosocial, education, and safety needs, and anticipates discharge needs.
  • Collaborates with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care, utilizes multidisciplinary resources, addresses cultural and ethnic issues, and prioritizes tasks for patients with complex problems.
  • Reads relevant journals, brings ideas and questions to staff for assessment of applicability.
  • Education Requirements
    • Graduation from a school of professional nursing.
    • If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment and obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing within seven years of employment.
    Licensure/Certification Requirements
    • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
    Professional Experience Requirements
    • One year of nursing experience.
