Description
6 Memorial is a 28‑bed acute care, inpatient nursing unit at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. The interdisciplinary team provides evidence‑based, high‑quality care primarily to adult post‑surgical patients with weight‑loss issues, gastrointestinal cancers, and complex, non‑cancer GI‑related illnesses.
You’ll work alongside a highly collaborative team of nurses, GI specialists, and surgical oncology leaders affiliated with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, a nationally recognized leader in cancer care. Our unit is also proud to be part of a Bariatric Center of Excellence.
This is a great fit for nurses who want hands‑on experience with complex, high‑acuity patients while practicing at the top of their license in a supportive, team‑based environment.
What you’ll do
- Care for post‑op surgical patients with complex GI needs
- Manage lines, drains, and tubes (PICC, chest tubes, NG tubes, etc.)
- Administer TPN, blood products, and anticoagulants
- Support mobility, respiratory care, and pain management
- Provide wound care, ostomy care, and nutritional support
As part of the clinical ladder, this position requires the submission of a portfolio or extended CV for external candidates.
This position is 40 hours a week, for Day Shift, and qualifies for an excellent benefit package.
Responsibilities
Clinical Nursing Practice – Promotes an environment that values diversity, open communication, teamwork, and exceptional service. Ensures appropriate care and services for patients, clients, and families during the assigned shift. Facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration in patient/client care planning to achieve desired outcomes and coordinates care with team members. Demonstrates and role‑models clinical expertise in specified patient population and shares that expertise with other staff.
Promotes and ensures the use of the nursing process to provide quality patient care. Anticipates patient and family learning needs and organizes resources to meet those needs. Performs bedside point‑of‑care testing as required.Education and Professional Development – Coordinates, designs, and implements educational programs to meet identified learning needs of staff, patients, and families. Promotes staff participation in continuing education, orientation, competency, in‑service, and development offerings. Participates in the development and implementation of competency initiatives. Serves as an area‑specialty consultant in designing educational programs. Provides clinical expertise for patient education materials and promotes professional growth of self and staff.HR Management – Creates and promotes an environment conducive to recruiting and retaining staff. Provides feedback to Manager/Supervisor and Director to assist in hiring, promotion, transfer, and termination decisions. Assists Nurse Manager by providing staff with performance feedback and opportunities to set professional goals. Models and promotes behaviors that give continual feedback and integrates best‑practice standards regarding staff retention.Operational and Fiscal Management – Establishes and promotes standards of excellence for responsibility areas, ensuring consistent implementation by staff. Provides input on trends related to program development, space needs, and fiscal realities. Ensures appropriate and adequate clinical staffing and skill mix for current and upcoming shifts. Uses clinical and financial information to assist Nurse Manager in meeting budgetary goals and to implement strategies that increase revenue and manage resources cost‑effectively.
Evaluates the impact of fiscal changes on quality outcomes and assists in meeting regulatory standards.Research and Performance Improvement – Collaborates with Nurse Manager to evaluate applicable research and promotes changes in standards of care. Guides research development and implementation, utilizing resources to ask research questions and apply appropriate methods. Shares knowledge through publication, presentations, or other means.
