Unit Overview

3 West Acute Care Nephrology & Medicine Team - New Graduate RN Opportunity (Fall New Grads)

UNC Medical Center

The 3 West Acute Care Nephrology & Medicine unit invites dedicated, passionate, and growth‑oriented nurses to join our team. You’ll be at the forefront of advanced nephrology care, surrounded by a team that values challenge, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Unit Highlights
  • 22 bed acute medicine unit
  • 1:5 nurse‑to‑patient ratio
  • Primary patient diagnoses include:
    End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) requiring hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis;
    Acute Kidney Injury;
    Chronic Kidney Disease;
    Dialysis Access Issues;
    Renal Transplant Rejection;
    Autoimmune disorders
Position Details
  • 36 hours per week
  • Rotating day/night shifts + weekends
  • Self‑scheduling to balance individual and unit needs
  • Must be eligible for RN licensure in North Carolina prior to start
New Graduate Residency Program Eligibility
  • Final semester nursing students or graduates within the past 12 months
  • Less than 6 months of RN experience

Up to $10,000 in relocation assistance may be offered (dependent on mileage).

Responsibilities
  • Education – Participate in identifying and meeting learning needs of self, attend education programs, use patient education materials, assess readiness to learn of patient, family, caregivers, assess developmental level and factors affecting ability to learn.
  • Evaluation of Care – Identify expected patient outcomes, seek guidance for plan of care revision, participate in interdisciplinary evaluation, communicate relevant information for continuity of care.
  • Implementation – Demonstrate competence in care of patients with complex problems, perform bedside point‑of‑care testing, utilize nursing standards, policies, and procedures, organize and prioritize care, consult resources timely regarding complex care, unusual teaching needs, high‑risk discharge planning.
  • Leadership – Develop goals for professional growth, achieve goals or renegotiate with supervisor, participate in unit goals and performance improvement, use communication systems, promote cost‑effective care, give feedback, know public policy and regulatory guidelines, promote safe, clean, secure environment.
  • Patient Assessment – Recognize data from complex situations, determine care priorities, include physical, psychosocial, educational, safety needs, synthesize assessment data, anticipate discharge needs, build relationships with families.
  • Planning – Collaborate with patient/family, use multidisciplinary resources, convey planning through multiple communication methods, address cultural/ethnic issues, prioritize tasks for complex patients.
  • Research – Read relevant journals, bring ideas for practice applicability to staff.
  • Education Requirements
    • Graduation from a school of professional nursing.
    • If hired after January 6 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment and obtain a Bachelor’s degree major in Nursing within seven years of employment date.
    Licensure/Certification Requirements
    • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the day of clinical care.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification.
