Clinical Support Technician II (Nursing Assistant II + Clerical) needed for GI Surgery Acute Care Unit – 6 Memorial. 6 Memorial is a 28‑bed, acute care, inpatient nursing unit at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. Our interdisciplinary team provides evidence‑based and high‑quality care primarily to adult post‑surgical patients with weight loss issue, gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, and complex non‑cancer GI‑related illnesses.

Our nursing team members can expect to work within the full scope of their practice in a multi‑disciplinary setting.

Patient populations and required skills:
Close post‑operative observation, remote cardiac telemetry, early aggressive mobilization, pulmonary hygiene, extensive physical therapies, IV, central line/PICC line care, administration of TPN, anticoagulation, oxygen therapy, pain management, blood product administration, intake/output, and ostomy care. Multiple tube/drain care including chest tubes, Foley catheters, NG tubes, G‑tubes, J‑tubes, J/P drains, rectal tubes. Extensive complex wound management and multimodal nutritional support throughout hospitalization.

This is a 36‑hour per week position: days/nights (7 am – 7:30 pm and 7 pm – 7:30 am) with weekend and holiday rotation. This position qualifies for an extensive benefit package including PTO, accrued based on hours worked.

Summary

The Clinical Support Technician II assists the professional caregiver in delivering patient care, transporting patients and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and performing a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance functions for the unit desk area. Performs patient care requiring sterile techniques, infusion monitoring, and medical equipment. Coordinates unit communications. May be assigned patient care based on unit needs.

Tracks supply inventory, orders supplies, assists with clerical and administrative support (PI audits, data entry).

Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians and other healthcare providers with routine examinations, procedures, and procurement of equipment and supplies.
  • Critically review patient care documentation for significant changes and report immediately to a registered nurse or physician.
  • Perform clerical tasks: organize workload, greet visitors, research information, review and revise orders, answer telephone/patient call lights, transcribe physician orders, maintain medical records, conduct quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies.
  • Provide administrative and clerical support including PI audits and data entry.
  • Perform clinical support tasks: clean work area, maintain office equipment, troubleshoot software/hardware, change linens, check supply inventory, restock supplies, transport patients/supplies/specimens, help orient new employees and students.
  • Provide direct personal care per plan of care: bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation assistance; measure/record vital signs, height, weight. May collect specimens, perform skin preps, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, postural drainage, oxygen room set‑up, oxygen flow monitoring, suctioning, tracheostomy care, fecal impaction removal, sterile dressing changes, wound irrigation, IV fluid assembly/monitoring, IV site care and discontinuation, ostomy irrigation and care, urinary catheterization and irrigation, oral/nasogastric/gastrostomy tube feeding.
  • Reinforce teaching given by registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding. Distribute patient education materials.
  • Qualifications
    • High School diploma or GED.
    • License as Nursing Assistant I and Nursing Assistant II by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
    • One year of clerical or customer service experience and three months of nursing assistant experience.
    • Fluent verbal and written English; willing to develop computer skills.
