Nursing Assistant I (Per Diem) - Acute Care Trauma and General Surgery

Nursing Assistant I is needed for the 5 Bed Tower Acute Care Trauma and General Surgery Unit. This is a per diem, at‑will position requiring a minimum of 24 hours per month. Rotating day and night 12‑hour shifts (7am‑7:30pm & 7pm‑7:30am) with weekend and holiday rotation.

Prefer candidates with at least six months of direct patient care experience in a hospital setting.

Summary

Provides routine direct and indirect patient care in a hospital, clinic, or home health care setting, under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician.

Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procure equipment and supplies during emergency situations.
  • Aid patients in reality orientation, participate in behavior modification plans, provide informal support therapy, perform verbal de‑escalation of potentially aggressive patients, manage aggressive patients physically, facilitate age‑appropriate play for children, and monitor therapeutic milieu activities.
  • Observe, collect, and document patient information; promptly report significant changes in the patient’s condition to a registered nurse or physician.
  • Assist patients and their families during admission, orientation, and discharge from the clinical area.
  • Provide care and treatments as outlined in the plan of care, including vital signs, height and weight measurements, specimen collection, skin preparations, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range‑of‑motion exercises, postural drainage, and supportive patient and family interactions.
  • Provide direct personal care for routine activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and ambulation assistance.
  • Provide indirect care including cleaning the work area, changing linens, restocking supplies, cleaning/sterilizing instruments, transporting patients, assisting in orientation of new employees and students, and routine clerical functions.
  • Reinforce teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician, document patient understanding, and distribute patient education materials as requested.

    Education Requirements:

    • None required if all other position requirements are met.

    Licensure/Certification Requirements:

    • Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

    Professional Experience Requirements:

    • Prefer six (6) months of nursing assistant experience.

    Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

    • Fluent in verbal and written English.
    • Basic computer skills.
