UNC Health is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join the Department of Neurosurgery - Spine Team in an outpatient position. The APP will work closely with neurosurgeons in the evaluation, treatment, and ongoing management of patients with spine conditions, spine deformities, and spinal oncology. Responsibilities include performing comprehensive outpatient assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and imaging, developing and implementing evidence-based treatment plans, and providing pre- and post-operative care and patient education.

The APP will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate care and optimize patient outcomes. Prior experience in neurosurgery or spine is preferred but not required.

Summary

A Physician Assistant functions as part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high quality, cost effective care to patients within the APPs scope of practice in collaboration with a supervising physician. The APP reflects the mission, vision, and values of the organization, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical – obtains relevant health and medical history, performs thorough physical assessment, reviews and interprets diagnostic tests, develops differential diagnoses, implements treatment plans, orders pharmacological agents, schedules follow-up, conducts preventive screening, maintains comprehensive records, stays current on general disease processes and specialty literature, ensures correct diagnoses, revises plans as needed, prioritizes work, maintains productivity, leads projects to improve productivity, performs procedures consistent with guidelines.
  • Education – educates clients/families on medical conditions, collaborates with clinicians and staff, develops educational materials, provides instruction to physicians, house staff, nursing, ancillaries, and students, participates in identifying learning needs, attends education programs.
  • Leadership – provides instruction and training to physicians, house staff, nursing, ancillaries, and students, participates in and leads community/network outreach, demonstrates understanding of healthcare contexts, leads systems improvements.
  • Professional – interacts with patients and families respectfully, collaborates with coworkers, responds quickly to meet customer needs, accepts responsibility, shares workload.
  • Quality/Research – engages in continuous quality improvement, consults with management, leads interdisciplinary teams, initiates and revises protocols and guidelines, influences policy-making, develops new clinical programs or services to improve patient care.
Other Information Education Requirements
  • Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
  • Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina.
  • Board certification if required by the Department.
  • DEA license.
