Now a Specialized Cardiology Unit at UNC Medical Center. UNC Medical Center is transforming 7 Bedtower from a General Medicine unit into a specialized Cardiology Unit launching this July. This is a rare opportunity for experienced nurses who are passionate about cardiac care and want to help shape a newly designed, high-impact clinical environment. You will join a collaborative team dedicated to delivering exceptional cardiovascular care and have the opportunity to influence unit workflows, clinical practices, and culture-building a best-in-class cardiac nursing unit from the ground up.

Unit

Overview
  • 20-bed unit with a mix of step-down and acute care beds
  • Patient population includes: myocardial infarction, heart failure, and arrhythmias
  • Care includes: pre- and post-cardiac catheterization & electrophysiology procedures (pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator placements, ablations)
Schedule and Environment
  • Three 12-hour shifts per week (36 hours)
  • Shift differentials offered for weekends, nights, and evenings

Responsibilities
  • Education – Participate in identifying and meeting learning needs of self. Attend education programs based on identified learning needs. Use patient education materials relevant to the patient population. Assess readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers. Assess developmental level of patient and factors affecting ability to learn.
  • Evaluation of Care – Identify expected patient outcomes. Seek guidance as needed in revision of the plan of care. Participate in discussion with interdisciplinary team in evaluation of patient care. Communicate relevant information to promote continuity of care.
  • Implementation – Demonstrate competence in care of patients with complex problems, including physical, psychosocial, educational and safety aspects of care. Perform bedside point-of-care testing as required. Use organizational policies and procedures in care delivery. Organize and prioritize care according to patient/family needs. Consult with appropriate resources regarding complex care issues and discharge planning.
  • Leadership – Develop and pursue goals to promote professional growth. Contribute to unit goals and performance improvement. Communicate effectively and promote cost-effective care. Provide feedback to co-workers and participate in promoting a safe environment and regulatory compliance.
  • Patient Assessment – Recognize data from complex situations to determine care priorities. Synthesize assessment data and communicate findings. Assess and anticipate discharge needs. Build relationships with families to support advocacy for the patient.
  • Planning – Collaborate with patient/family to update the plan of care. Leverage multidisciplinary resources and communicate plans effectively. Address cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care. Prioritize tasks for complex cases.
  • Research – Engage with current studies or articles relevant to practice and discuss applicability with the team.
  • Education and Qualifications
    • Education Requirements: Graduation from a school of professional nursing. If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years and obtain a Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a Master's degree in Nursing within seven years of employment.
    • Licensure/Certification Requirements: Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
