Position SummaryThe Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of North Carolina is seeking a secondary faculty proton medical physicist for the North Carolina Cancer Center. The Center is located in Chapel Hill, NC and is part of the UNC Health Care System. It currently hosts 13 radiation oncologists, 7 dosimetrists, 12 medical physicists, and an IT specialist. The Center is equipped with Elekta accelerators, Cyber Knife, Mobetron, HDR systems, and is installing a Varian True Beam.
A Mevion S250-FIT Proton Therapy System is to be installed in 2027. Clinical treatment planning systems include Raystation, Accuray Precision, Oncentra HDR Brachy, Vari Seed LDR Brachy, and ancillary systems like VisionRT. The role reports to the lead proton faculty physicist and will be involved in acceptance, commissioning, and clinical proton therapy services.
- Assist in acceptance and commissioning of the Mevion S250-FIT proton therapy system, acquisition of dosimetry data, and commissioning of proton treatment planning in Ray Station.
- Provide clinical proton therapy physics services, ensuring accurate and safe delivery of treatments and maintaining patient and staff safety.
- Support research efforts and collaborate on projects within the Department and School of Medicine.
- Mentor residents in the CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Residency Program.
Candidate must hold an MS or PhD in Medical Physics, Physics, Engineering, or a related field; be A /ABMP board certified or board eligible (passed Part
1); and have completed a CAMPEP-accredited residency. Experience in proton therapy physics is required.
Strong technical skills, commitment to research and teaching, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a proactive approach to collaborative projects.
