Work Schedule:
Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Serves as a team member of the Life Safety/Electronics-Specialty and Emergency Generator Shop. Supports the section’s daily functions, including routine and preventive maintenance (PM) inspections on Life Safety, Fire Detection and Suppression systems, Equipment Monitoring Systems, and other electronic systems. Installs and modifies Life Safety, Fire Detection and Suppression Systems and Equipment Monitoring Systems. Obtains and maintains licensure to inspect these systems and maintains NICET and manufacturer certifications as required.
Responsibilities- Perform routine and preventive maintenance (PM) inspections on Life Safety, Fire Detection and Suppression systems, Equipment Monitoring Systems, and related electronic systems.
- Install and modify Life Safety and related systems; support Emergency Generator Shop as needed.
- Adhere to manufacturer specifications and applicable codes (NFPA 12A, NFPA 25, NFPA 72, International Fire Code).
- Obtain and maintain required licensure and NICET certifications for inspections and system work; maintain multiple manufacturer system certifications.
- Collaborate with team members and comply with safety and regulatory requirements.
Associate’s degree in electronics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Licenses & Certifications- NICET Level II certification in Fire Alarm Systems.
- NICET Level II certification in Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems.
- Fire Sprinkler Inspection Technician License (NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors).
- Fire Sprinkler Maintenance Technician License (NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors).
Note:
Individuals not holding NICET Level II Certification for Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems, or the required Fire Sprinkler licenses, are expected to obtain them within the stated time frames at the university’s expense as a condition of continued employment.
NICET Level II certification for Fire Alarm Systems required within four (4) years; NICET Level II Certification for Water-Based Systems and related Fire Sprinkler licenses may be required within three (3) years, as applicable, with university support.
Driver’s LicenseMust possess a valid NC Driver’s License or have the ability to obtain one prior to hire date.
Special Physical & Mental RequirementsAbility to stand for long periods, work from lifts, climb ladders/scaffolding up to 10 ft, crawl, enter manholes or work in confined spaces, move objects 40 lb or more, and wear respiratory protection as required. Ability to support BSL 2+ and 3 labs with appropriate safety protocols and escorts. Ability to work as a mandatory employee during essential University operations, including during adverse weather or emergencies.

Evening work, on-call, night work, weekend work, and exposure to hazardous materials may be required. Valid NC Driver’s License and related schedule requirements apply.

Compensation & BenefitsSalary range: $52,549 – $74,585. Hiring range is provided; pay band information can be reviewed in the official Career Banding rates spreadsheet.
