Electronics Specialist – Journey

This full‑time permanent position is located within the Chilled Water Systems (CWS) unit at UNC Chapel Hill. The role focuses on the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of distributed control systems and instrumentation across multiple chilled water plants and a thermal energy storage system.

• Install, commission, and maintain distributed control systems and instrumentation for 5 large‑scale chilled water plants and associated equipment.
• Update and maintain control hardware and software during plant expansions and upgrades.
• Operate and troubleshoot existing and new control systems to ensure continuous plant operation.
• Calibrate and test control devices such as valves, loop calibrators, and power analyzers according to OSHA lockout/tag‑out procedures.
• Maintain an instrument database and troubleshoot instrumentation and power electronics issues.
• Participate in on‑call rotation, periodic overtime, and occasional night or weekend work as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

• Associate’s degree in electronics or equivalent combination of training and experience; all degrees must be from accredited institutions.
• Experience with distributed control systems (DCS) or supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA) is preferred.
• Hands‑on experience with control system installation, commissioning, and maintenance.

• Valid North Carolina driver’s license.

• Ascend/descend ladders or stairs to up to 120 feet.
• Work hands‑free at high elevations, using approved safety equipment.
• Enter confined spaces.
• Handle or be exposed to hazardous materials.
• Lift up to 50 lbs without assistance.
• Operate large equipment weighing up to 1000 lbs with suitable rigging.
• Endure very noisy environments with hearing protection.
• Operate energized equipment up to 1000 volts.
• Use laptop computers, digital multimeters, and precision instruments for calibrations.

Full‑time, 40 hours per week. Typical hours are 6:30 AM–3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime, night shifts, weekend work, and on‑call duties as necessary.

A sign‑on bonus of $5,838 is available to the selected applicant, paid in two installments: $2,919 within 30 days of hire and the remaining $2,919 on the 12th month of employment. Eligibility is subject to budget and final determination and requires signing a Pay Back Agreement.
