TEACHER – Middle School Mathematics

POSITION TYPE:
Exempt

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Assume responsibility for planning, delivering, assessing, and evaluating mathematics instruction that promotes academic achievement and prepares students in grades 6–8 to meet the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). Foster critical thinking, problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and real-world application while maintaining a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required;
    Master's degree preferred.
  • Holds or is eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Middle Education 6–8:
    Mathematics, Mathematics, or another appropriate Virginia endorsement for the assigned grade level and content area.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOLs), curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessment practices.
  • Demonstrates professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and members of the community.
  • Demonstrates effective oral, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to utilize instructional technology, learning management systems, and electronic student information systems.
  • Ability to move about the classroom to monitor students and provide instruction in classrooms with varied seating arrangements.
  • Ability to supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, gymnasiums, field trips, and other school-related activities.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain required reports and documentation.
  • Ability to lift instructional materials and equipment with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Possesses high moral standards, integrity, professionalism, and maintains confidentiality.
  • Successfully completes all employment requirements, including criminal history and child protective services background checks as required by Virginia law.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plans and delivers engaging mathematics instruction aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and School Division curriculum.
  • Develops lesson plans that promote conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving.
  • Uses a variety of research-based instructional strategies and technology to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Differentiates instruction and provides appropriate interventions and enrichment opportunities based on student achievement data.
  • Integrates mathematical practices, critical thinking, and real-world applications into daily instruction.
  • Creates and maintains a safe, orderly, respectful, and positive classroom environment that promotes student learning.
  • Monitors, assesses, and documents student learning using formal and informal assessment methods.
  • Analyzes student achievement data to guide instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
  • Prepares students for success on the Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate standards of student behavior that support an effective learning environment.
  • Encourages responsible citizenship, respect for diversity, positive character development, and appropriate student conduct.
  • Identifies instructional resources, interventions, and support services necessary to meet individual student needs.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records as required by law, School Board policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Communicates regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, instructional programs, attendance, behavior, and school-related matters.
  • Collaborates with teachers, instructional coaches, counselors, administrators, special education staff, English Learner staff, and support personnel to improve student achievement.
