Counselor/Activity Specialist - Camp Burnt Gin in Sumter, SC

Location:

Camp Burnt Gin, Sumter County, SC (residential). Staff live at the camp during sessions.

Job Responsibilities
  • Supervise and provide daily care for up to eight campers with physical disabilities or chronic illnesses, including safety regulations, daily camp schedule, and assistance with activities of daily living (feeding, bathing, hygiene).
  • Live in a cabin with campers, ensuring continuous supervision, promoting socialization, and adapting to camp life.
  • Assist campers with activities of daily living, such as feeding, bathing, changing, and other hygiene tasks.
  • Guide campers through the daily camp schedule, providing assistance so each camper can fully participate.
  • Plan and implement activities in arts and crafts, sports and games, nature and science, and fine arts, tailored to campers' age, interests, and abilities.
  • Adapt activities to ensure all campers can participate.
  • Assist with setting up and occasionally running evening activities such as talent show and camp dance.
  • Assist with assigned cabin group for the session when not involved in own activity area.
  • Maintain activity area.
  • Participate in a weeklong staff orientation/training.
  • Assist with tasks required to open and close camp, and daily activities to maintain a clean facility.
  • Attend staff meetings when not on cabin duty.
  • Participate in all aspects of Camp Burnt Gin programming: singing during meals, morning motivation and movement, committee work, mid‑morning activities, swimming and boating, evening programs.
  • Create awards for campers, write parent letters, and complete evaluation forms for campers' charts.
Qualifications
  • At least a rising junior in college and/or 21 years old, or a rising sophomore with at least one year of camp experience.
  • Knowledge and/or expertise in an activity area and ability to teach/lead activities.
  • Positive role model able to work with children outdoors.
  • Ability to assist with activities of daily living and lift/carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Good judgment, visual and auditory ability to supervise and respond to hazards or emergencies.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals and groups, respect diversity, and maintain appropriate boundaries.
