Role Description

The Field Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in the Charleston, South Carolina Metropolitan Area. This position supports concrete construction projects by coordinating field activities, verifying dimensions, elevations, and tolerances, and assisting with layout and quality control. Daily responsibilities include troubleshooting site issues, providing technical support to crews, monitoring progress against plans and schedules, and documenting work performed. The Field Engineer will collaborate closely with project managers, forepersons, and subcontractors to ensure safety standards, specifications, and timelines are met.

The role also involves maintaining accurate records, participating in site meetings, and helping implement project plans and changes. The Field Engineer will demonstrate competency in the following areas in order to perform the role safely, productively, and effectively. These areas describe the general nature and level of the work; they are not an exhaustive list of every responsibility, skill, effort, or working condition associated with the position.

  • Installation of onsite layout — Establish and maintain control, benchmarks, and building lines; execute layout for foundations, slabs, walls, and embeds
  • Layout that meets quality control requirements — Verify work against drawings and specified tolerances; document and communicate deviations
  • Direction and oversight of staff — Lead and develop instrument personnel and layout crews; assign work and confirm results
  • A safe work environment — Model and enforce site safety standards; participate in IIF planning, huddles, and hazard identification
  • Participation in training and certifications — Maintain required certifications and pursue continued development in survey and layout technology
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 2 years in an instrument operator role
  • Proficiency with total stations, digital levels, and layout software; robotic total station and GPS experience preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as assigned
  • Candidates should possess strong troubleshooting and technical support skills to resolve field and equipment issues efficiently.
  • Candidates should possess effective communication skills to collaborate with project teams, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Candidates should possess field service experience, including working on active construction sites and supporting daily operations.
  • Candidates should possess project management capabilities to help coordinate schedules, resources, and documentation.
  • Relevant qualifications such as a degree or diploma in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field are beneficial.
  • Knowledge of concrete construction methods, site safety practices, and reading drawings and specifications is preferred.
  • Proficiency with basic surveying tools and construction-related software is an asset.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions, maintain attention to detail, and follow safety and quality standards.
