The Division of Hospital Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in historic Charleston, South Carolina, is seeking exceptional candidates trained in both Internal Medicine and Psychiatry to provide clinical care to patients in a new 12‑bed inpatient Med‑Psych Unit. This unit serves patients hospitalized for a medical indication but with significant psychiatric comorbidities, such as refractory delirium, catatonia, substance abuse, and others.
It provides an elective opportunity for medical students and residents from combined med‑psych, categorical internal medicine, and categorical psychiatry residency programs. The unit resides in University Hospital and is on the same MUSC Health Charleston campus as the 100‑bed Institute of Psychiatry.
Candidates will join an established academic hospital medicine team at the assistant, associate, or professor level. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and professional experience. Our division offers care on 5 teaching services, 8 direct patient‑care services, orthopedic and neurosurgery spine co‑management services, and additional surgical consultations. We also participate in a large pre‑operative clinic to improve surgical outcomes and provide tele‑hospitalist services to rural hospitals across South Carolina.
Responsibilities- Provide clinical care to patients in the Med‑Psych unit, addressing both medical and psychiatric needs.
- Participate in teaching and educational activities for residents and medical students.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives and delivery of high‑value healthcare services.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including surgeons, psychiatrists, and primary care clinicians.
- Board‑certified or board‑eligible in both Internal Medicine and Psychiatry.
- Demonstrated scholarly focus on quality improvement and high‑value care.
- Commitment to educational excellence and capacity to lead inpatient services.
