Chair and Associate or Full Professor of French, Francophone, and Italian Studies

The College of Charleston seeks a dynamic scholar, teacher, and academic leader at the rank of associate or full professor to serve as Chair of the Department of French, Francophone, and Italian Studies. The successful candidate will bring a strategic vision for the department, strong communication and leadership skills, and a demonstrated commitment to fostering a participatory and supportive environment. The chair will lead efforts in curricular innovation, faculty development, student success, and the continued enhancement of the department’s national reputation.

The chair will hold a full-time, tenured faculty appointment in the Department of French, Francophone, and Italian Studies within the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs. Candidates should have expertise in French, Francophone, or Italian Studies, or a closely related field, along with a distinguished record of research, publication, and teaching sufficient for appointment with tenure at the rank of associate or full professor.

The position offers a competitive salary and a teaching load commensurate with administrative responsibilities.

French, Francophone, and Italian Studies is a dynamic and vibrant department that enrolls approximately 1,000 students per semester and offers majors in French and Francophone Studies and French Teacher Education, as well as minors in French and Italian Studies. Many students combine this program with majors such as International Business, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Marketing, and International Studies. The department offers students a range of enrichment opportunities, including study abroad programs, experiential learning, student clubs, and residence in the historic French House.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of academic leadership and program development as well as collegiality, professionalism, and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
