7:00am – 3:30pm
Under very limited supervision, maintain full functionality of process control laboratory, coordinate all laboratory activities for wastewater NPDES testing, and evaluate laboratory test results and convey information to operating staff or plant management as appropriate. Interface with regulatory agencies, vendors, plant personnel, inter‑department personnel, and management. Required to work with chemicals and may be required to work under emergency conditions.
Essential Functions- Sample collection for laboratory analysis to assess water quality and treatment plant performance.
- Conduct physical, chemical, and bacteriological laboratory analysis as applicable to wastewater, biosolids, and environmental samples in a traceable manner to provide data of known and documented quality.
- Ensure maintenance of water quality data in accordance with NPDES permit – to include sampling process, completion of monthly Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR), and extra compliance analysis.
- Assure compliance with DES and EPA monitoring schedules and assist management and shift supervisor to troubleshoot the process to maintain compliance.
- Reviews and recommends enhancements to test processes and procedures within our standard operating procedures. Performs quality control and quality assurance laboratory tests.
- Ensure completion of Laboratory work orders/request and submit service requests through work order system as needed.
- Coordinate various activities with Maintenance, Process Control Staff, subcontract laboratories, and Hanahan Lab.
- Maintain Laboratory Certification compliance for certified parameters.
- Assist with maintenance of Hach WIMS program.
- Maintain on‑time and accurate records of all analytical work to include entering/retrieving computer data, quality control charts, graphs, data interpretation, and comprehensive report writing.
- Assist with ISO 14001 documentation for the Process Lab – to include writing SOIs, monitoring & measuring requirements for lab equipment/meters, and assisting with compliance audits.
- Maintain Chemical Hygiene Program for Environmental Resource Department.
- Regular attendance is required.
- Job performance must conform to all CWS policies and procedures.
- Specific knowledge of CWS Environmental Management System Policy and Procedures.
- Train and assist other laboratory personnel in intermediate and advanced analyses and laboratory procedures.
- Conduct visitor tours through the treatment plant and handle customer complaints as necessary.
- Must be available for assignment at all CWS facilities for both intra and inter‑department cross training.
- Follow all lab safety procedures.
- Assist with execution of the Industrial Pretreatment Program as directed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements , Activities, and Working Conditions
- Ability to operate and maintain motor vehicles.
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- May be required to transport water sample containers in company vehicle.
- May have to transport field sampling and analysis equipment.
- Must be able to observe and comprehend digital and needle scale instrument measurements.
- Must have manual dexterity to handle pipets, burets, and twist and turn calibration adjustment knobs.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs to perform required task. Objects greater than 50 lbs requires a two‑person operation.
- This position requires the handling of chemicals, and therefore may be exposed to certain atmospheric conditions, which may affect the respiratory system or skin (fumes, odors, dust, mists, and gases). Personnel Protective Equipment Required.
- Working location is primarily in a laboratory or outdoors working around the treatment plant.
- Must be able to ascend/descend ladders, stairs, and ramps as high as three (3) stories.
