Job Overview
HDR’s Building Engineering Services Group is hiring ICT (Information & Communication Technology) / Physical Security Technicians and Designers to join our team in Charleston, South Carolina. The role focuses on designing and implementing cutting‑edge physical security and telecommunications infrastructure for clients across a range of projects.
Primary Responsibilities- Produce floor plans, device layouts, riser diagrams, details, and system schematics for telecommunications, access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection, and perimeter protection.
- Review RFPs, scopes of work, and technical specifications for integrators and vendors.
- Review shop drawings, submittals, and as-built documentation for technical accuracy and compliance.
- Act as a technical authority for telecommunications and/or physical security infrastructure.
- Demonstrate strong general engineering knowledge of either horizontal/backbone cabling or electronic security systems and coordinate with commercial hardware vendors.
- Design cabling pathways such as conduits or cable tray systems and proper bonding systems.
- Meet with project clients to evaluate, define, and review customer needs and ensure project design meets requirements.
- Define and develop complete project construction documents (SD, DD, CD) to show design intent and assist with system‑related construction administration activities.
- Coordinate with integrated multidisciplinary project teams to develop functional requirements and system designs.
- Edit telecommunication or security specification for the specific project.
- Maintain knowledge of current industry product offerings and research emerging technologies.
- Assist in problem resolution and technical troubleshooting when field support is needed.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Engineering bachelor’s degree, RCDD or PSP preferred.
- Entry‑level to five years of related work experience.
- Can‑do attitude and problem‑solving mindset.
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks independently.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
- Strong computer skills and proficiency with Bluebeam and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with Revit or AutoCAD a bonus.
- Knowledge of engineering drawings and design standards.
- Strong desire for continuous learning and professional education.
- Applicants will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
- Preference given to local candidates.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a combination of education and relevant experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in security design and familiarity with Autodesk.
- RCDD (Registered Communication Distribution Designer) and Electrical Engineering degree helpful.
