Job Summary
Senior NDT Engineer – Advanced Manufacturing & Repair Technology (AMRT) – Inspection Technology Process Development team (Greenville, SC). Responsible for leading the design, development, validation and deployment of advanced non‑destructive testing (NDT) inspection technologies for gas turbine, steam turbine and generator product lines.
Responsibilities- Lead the development and validation of novel NDT inspection techniques for complex turbine and generator components, with expertise in Eddy Current (ET) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
- Design and specify custom inspection probes and tooling in collaboration with vendors, engineering centers and R&D teams.
- Negotiate technical requirements and drive continuous improvement in inspection tooling and instrumentation.
- Author, approve and maintain formal process engineering specifications and review inspection procedures, work instructions, technique sheets and engineering specifications in line with applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASNT, ASTM, ASME, MIL, EN, ISO).
- Serve as the primary technical SME for NDT inspection, providing guidance and training to production, MPE, repair, field service and quality teams on inspection‑related questions, non‑conformances and corrective actions.
- Coordinate and collaborate with global counterparts to align inspection strategies, share best practices and support technology transfer worldwide.
- Lead or support the substantiation for new inspection processes, including structured validation studies and Probability of Detection (PoD) assessments.
- Represent the team in internal and external technical reviews, design reviews, customer audits and industry forums related to NDT inspection.
- Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers and technicians, contributing to the overall technical growth and capability development of the team.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Materials Science or related discipline) and 8+ years of progressive NDT engineering experience with a focus on technique design, development, validation, industrialization and process documentation.
- ASNT NDT Level II certification (ET and UT) or 10+ years of experience with ASNT Level III certification in ET and/or UT (in lieu of a degree).
- Willingness to travel up to 15% per year for validation testing and field services.
- Strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem‑solving skills with a proven track record of delivering technically sound solutions under schedule and quality constraints.
- Experience authoring and approving NDT procedures in compliance with industry standards and customer specifications.
- Knowledge of EPRI, ASNT, ASME and other NDT industry standards and technical specifications.
- Proficiency with NDT simulation or modeling tools (e.g., CIVA, COMSOL) for technique optimization and virtual validation, and with CAD (e.g., NX, Solid Works).
- Working knowledge of fracture mechanics and experience with other NDT technologies such as radiography, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, etc.
- Direct background in gas turbine, steam turbine, or generator component inspection (blades, vanes, nozzles, wheels, rotors, windings, casings).
- Master’s degree in engineering.
- ASNT NDT Level III certification in ET and/or UT with experience in advanced UT techniques (PAUT, FMC/TFM, TOFD) or advanced ET techniques (pulsed eddy current, ECA, ACFM, rotating probe inspection).
- Proven experience developing inspection solutions for complex geometries, hard‑to‑access locations and advanced materials typical of rotating turbo machinery.
- Experience leading Probability of Detection (PoD) studies and formal inspection qualification programs.
