The Reactor Training Engineer trains Naval personnel to be nuclear plant operators utilizing reactors and state-of-the-art simulators. It is an accelerated leadership development opportunity in one of the most prestigious programs in the world. This unique position provides hands‑on nuclear plant operations experience while building a repertoire of leadership skills. Individuals will lead Naval students in a training environment to fulfill the mission of the program, to train sailors on the fundamental principles of safe nuclear operations which prepares them for service on submarines and aircraft carriers.
The impact of this leadership position is to ensure that the nuclear powered fleet is fully staffed with the best trained operators in the world. Individuals in this position will qualify as a nuclear plant supervisor providing participants with an opportunity to combine technical skills with interpersonal skills.
While assigned to the Moored Training Ships, as a trainee and staff instructor, rotating shift work is required. In addition to advanced development opportunities, this position offers incentive bonuses and while working rotating shift work a rotating shift pay differential.
The Reactor Training Engineer will complete technical training and plant qualification responsibilities in an expeditious manner. The initial qualification is a 15‑month training program. The first six months consists of classroom instruction conducted by Navy instructors at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command. The subjects include Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Radiological Fundamentals, Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow, Chemistry, Materials, Physics, Reactor Dynamics, and Reactor Plant Operations.
The remaining nine months consists of on‑the‑job training, including some classroom and small group instructions, at the Moored Training Ships Site. Upon qualification as a nuclear plant supervisor, the Reactor Training Engineer will continue with advanced qualifications and technical training along with their duties as an instructor.

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science or technical related field from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Skills- BS Degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Marine Engineering, Radiation Health Engineering, Engineering Physics or Physics.
- Strong academics in core engineering courses (e.g., calculus, thermodynamics, electrical/electronics, physics, materials, dynamics, statics, chemistry).
- Ability to effectively communicate in a shipboard/prototype and instructional environments (e.g., express ideas in a clear, concise and logical manner; impart technical knowledge in an instructional environment; ability to provide clear and understandable verbal orders (face‑to‑face and over an announcing system) in a shipboard/prototype environment and casualty situations).
- Teaming (able to effectively work with a diverse group of personnel, including Navy, professional, and represented/union personnel).
- Problem solving (adept at applying academic skills/knowledge to solve practical technical problems).
