Job Description Principal Project Engineer Next Generation Training Program NGTP

Location: NPTU Charleston On Site with Telework Opportunities

Apply your naval nuclear Fleet and training pipeline experience to shape the Navy's nuclear operator training for decades to come. The NPTU Charleston Site Program Office seeks a Principal Project Engineer with strong Naval Nuclear Propulsion Training Program experience to lead impactful projects supporting NGTP. This role is ideal for civilians, officers, and senior enlisted with Naval Nuclear Training Pipeline backgrounds who want to serve the Navy in technical project management.

Role Overview

Plan and execute the transition of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Training Program to NGTP, directly influencing fleet capability and readiness while building expertise in complex project and program management.

Responsibilities
  • Lead project planning and execution for the Charleston Simulation Expansion Program and other major site projects and programs supporting NGTP and NPTU.
  • Develop and maintain project plans, cost and schedule baselines, and schedule trending and analysis for NGTP implementation.
  • Own and maintain the site's Integrated Master Schedule and support short and long range budget planning for Navy and NNL.
  • Support facilities planning and capital projects to enable future training capability.
  • Develop, maintain, and coordinate technical proposal cost controls, resource and staffing requirements, subcontract cost and schedule reviews, and budget and expense planning.
  • Gather and analyze cost and schedule data and prepare clear narrative, graphical, and statistical project reports for senior stakeholders.
  • Prepare forecasts for project related equipment, personnel, and space requirements to ensure training capacity meets long term demand.
  • Attend and lead project reviews, cost and schedule meetings, and working groups; serve as project planning liaison with NPTU organizations, NNL, and DoD stakeholders.
  • Assist management with yearly objectives and the site's 20 year strategy, linking near term work to long term mission outcomes.
  • Act as technical interface and subject matter expert for Training Program Initiatives related to NGTP.
  • Support NGTP training transition efforts and facility management engineering as needed.
  • Provide technical engineering support to Site Engineering, Site Operations, and Site Projects.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Provide consultation and project management leadership across site organizations.
  • Qualify and serve as a member of the NPTU Charleston Emergency Response Organization.
Additional Details

Position requires regular on site presence at NPTU Charleston; limited telework opportunities available, consistent with program needs .

Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering, science or construction field and a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering, science or construction field and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience; or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering, science or construction field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience;

or Currently a Principal Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.

Preferred Skills

We are especially interested in candidates with experience in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Training Pipeline such as:

  • Crew Training Engineer
  • Supervisor of In Hull Training
  • Navy Shift Engineer
  • Equivalent leadership roles in nuclear training, operations, or maintenance organizations
Additional Preferred Skills
  • Demonstrated leadership in nuclear training, qualification, or watchbill management, with a track record of mentoring and developing junior personnel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to develop clear reports, presentations, and visual displays of technical and project information for both technical and non technical audiences.
  • Strong planning, organizing, and scheduling skills; comfortable managing multiple concurrent tasks and priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft tools; experience with enterprise planning, scheduling, or project management tools is a plus.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across diverse organizations (ship, squadron, training commands, or shore activities) to execute complex initiatives.
