Respiratory Therapists perform a range of duties in support of patient care, including assessment, treatment, and collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Patient Assessment:
Evaluate patients with breathing difficulties or cardiopulmonary issues by reviewing medical history, conducting physical exams, and interpreting diagnostic tests (e.g., blood gases, chest X-rays, pulmonary function tests). - Respiratory Care:
Administer treatments to improve breathing (oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, chest physiotherapy, inhalation therapy such as nebulizers). - Equipment Management:
Set up and monitor respiratory devices (ventilators, oxygen tanks, CPAP machines); ensure proper function and maintenance. - Emergency Response:
Provide immediate life-saving interventions in respiratory emergencies. - Patient
Education:
Educate patients and families on managing chronic conditions (COPD, asthma, sleep apnea) and proper device/medication use. - Collaboration:
Work with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement care plans. - Documentation:
Maintain accurate records of assessments, treatments, and patient progress. - Pulmonary Rehabilitation:
Assist programs to improve respiratory function and exercise tolerance.
- Proficiency in using respiratory equipment and technology.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology related to respiratory care.
- Ability to assess patient conditions and respond to changes in respiratory status.
- Compassionate communication skills to educate patients and families.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, particularly in emergencies.
Education and Certification:
- Education:
An associate's or bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy from an accredited program. - Certification: NBRC certification (CRT or RRT) typically required.
Licensing and State Requirements:
- Licensure typically required in all states (NBRC exams and state-specific requirements).
- State-specific licensing details vary (e.g., California, Texas, New York, Florida, Nevada) and may include continuing education and renewal processes.
