Job Description Summary
Job Purpose:
The Sterile Processing Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and management of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). This role ensures that all surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are processed, sterilized, and distributed according to regulatory standards, hospital policies, and industry best practices. The Director collaborates with perioperative services, infection control, and other departments to support safe, efficient patient care.
- Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Sterile Processing Department (SPD).
- Ensure processing, sterilization, and distribution of instruments, equipment, and supplies meet regulatory standards, hospital policies, and industry best practices.
- Collaborate with perioperative services, infection control, and other departments to support safe, efficient patient care.
- Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Nursing, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum of 7–10 years of sterile processing experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of sterilization science, infection prevention, and regulatory standards.
- Proven ability to manage budgets, staffing, and operations in a healthcare environment.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
- CRCST – HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution).
Physical Requirements:
1) Continuous – 6-8 hours per shift;
2) Frequent – 2-6 hours per shift;
3) Infrequent – 0-2 hours per shift. Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, and within various environmental conditions. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted, and perform other movements and sensory functions as specified. Includes requirements to work rotating shifts, overtime as required, and in a latex-safe environment. Selected positions may include additional physical requirements for respirator use and sensory functions.

Education:
Bachelor Degree or Equivalent
Work Experience:
9 years progressive work experience and 4 years management experience. State licensure and/or professional certification requirement/s dependent on position. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
