Responsibilities
  • Pre-Procedure Preparation
    • Review patient medical history, orders, and prior imaging to determine appropriate MRI procedure.
    • Explain the MRI procedure to patients and address questions to reduce anxiety.
    • Complete necessary documentation, including informed consent and patient information.
    • Verify patient identity and screening criteria for safety (e.g., implants, contrast allergies, pregnancy).
    • Prepare and position the MRI room and equipment for the procedure.
  • Conducting MRI Scans
    • Operate the MRI machine and adjust settings to obtain high-quality images as prescribed.
    • Position patients on the MRI table and ensure comfort and correct alignment while maintaining safety.
    • Administer contrast agents as prescribed and monitor for adverse reactions.
    • Keep the patient still during the scan to ensure clear images.
    • Monitor the imaging process and adjust as needed for quality and safety.
  • Patient Safety and Comfort
    • Ensure safety by confirming no ferrous or metal objects are present and by following magnetic field safety guidelines.
    • Inform and reassure patients to maintain comfort during the scan.
    • Monitor vital signs and patient condition during the procedure.
    • Position patients properly to avoid injury or discomfort.
  • Post-Procedure Care
    • Assist patients off the MRI table and ensure stability and comfort post-procedure.
    • Provide post-procedure instructions, including care for injection sites if contrast was used.
    • Schedule any required follow-up imaging as necessary.
    • Address immediate concerns or side effects related to contrast or procedures.
  • Maintenance and Equipment Care
    • Ensure MRI machine calibration and routine maintenance; troubleshoot as needed.
    • Clean and disinfect the MRI suite and equipment between patients.
    • Monitor equipment performance and coordinate repairs as needed.
  • Collaboration with Medical Team
    • Communicate with physicians, radiologists, and staff to obtain correct images and meet patient needs.
    • Collaborate on image review, follow-up imaging decisions, and patient conditions.
    • Ensure final images meet diagnostic standards and are transmitted to the requesting physician.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping
    • Document patient information and scan results in the EHR, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
    • Label and upload imaging data; assist with reports or communications as needed.
    • Maintain logs of equipment usage, maintenance, and issues.
  • Radiation Safety and Protocols
    • Follow safety guidelines for handling contrast agents and related equipment; MRI does not use ionizing radiation.
    • Adhere to safety standards for nearby X-ray or CT equipment when applicable.
    • Follow magnetic field safety protocols to prevent accidents or injuries.
  • Professional Development and Training
    • Stay current with MRI technology, scanning techniques, and patient care practices.
    • Engage in continuing education and maintain licensure/certifications.
    • Assist in training new MRI technologists or students on MRI operation and patient care best practices.
