Job Description Summary

Peds Heart Center is a 29‑bed unit—ranked #2 nationally by U.S. News and World Report and #1 in patient outcomes—and is an AACN Beacon Award‑Winning unit. It is the referral center for all major pediatric cardiac surgery in South Carolina. The unit averages a daily census of 28 patients with a blend of cardiac surgical and medical diagnoses. Patients include those with congenital and acute heart disease of any age.

Procedures commonly associated with this unit include cardiac surgery, ventricular assist devices, heart transplant, cardiac catheterization, and other medical diagnoses related to cardiac care for children throughout South Carolina. The unit provides ventilatory and cardiac support, ECMO/CRRT and additional complex supportive therapies. Pediatric palliative care is available as needed. Staffing includes registered nurses, patient care technicians, and unit secretaries, with ancillary services such as respiratory therapy, pediatric dietitians, and pediatric pharmacists available as needed.

All beds are monitored beds.

Job Summary /Purpose

With limited supervision, the Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) reports to the Nurse Manager and assists in overall assessment, strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in assigned areas. The ANM supports the achievement of optimal department, Integrated Clinical Centers of Excellence (ICCE), and medical center goals, promotes shared governance, and fosters an environment of collaboration and respect across the MUSC Health System.

Responsibilities include maintaining a practice environment that meets clinical, staffing, quality, financial, and operational objectives while addressing age‑specific needs of patients, and providing departmental call coverage as required.

Minimum Training and Education

Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited institution;
Master of Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) may substitute for a BSN. If only a BSN, a master’s degree in a related field or DNP completion is expected within four years of hire. A minimum of three years of nursing experience is required, with extensive knowledge of the unit’s patient population, healthcare trends, community and regional resources, and service availability.

Ability to establish working relationships with diverse groups, medical staff, and other disciplines is essential. Certification in a specialty area is preferred or completion within one year of eligibility is strongly encouraged.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

Registered nurse licensure by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required (either AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent). Specialty certification preferred or completion within one year of eligibility strongly encouraged.

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, and climbing stairs; work indoors and outside in temperature extremes; work from elevated and confined spaces; and perform tasks that require various manipulations, reaching overhead, lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. Must maintain visual, hearing, and tactile acuity and manage stressful situations. Rotating shifts, overtime, and latex‑safe environments may be required.
