Job Summary
The University of South Carolina is seeking a skilled Business Affairs IT Technician to support the Carolina Card office’s access control and credentialing systems. This hands‑on role is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting card readers, door access systems, and associated hardware and software to ensure reliable daily operations.
The technician will monitor system performance (CSGOLD), perform routine diagnostics, and respond quickly to technical issues impacting access or meal plan functionality. This position also coordinates installation projects with vendors and contractors, provides on‑site technical oversight, and trains users on proper system operation. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong technical troubleshooting skills, the ability to work independently, and experience supporting hardware/software systems in a service‑oriented environment.
Job Duties- Carolina Card Hardware Support — Approximately 30% of time is spent performing hands‑on technical support for Carolina Card system hardware, including installation, programming, maintenance, repair, testing, and upgrades. Users are trained on proper operation and basic troubleshooting of components to ensure consistent system performance.
- Door Access Project Management — Approximately 45% of time is dedicated to coordinating door access system projects by reviewing requests, assessing user needs, and working directly with contractors and vendors during installation. The role provides on‑site technical oversight, verifies functionality, and ensures system components operate correctly prior to final approval.
- System Monitoring and Maintenance — Approximately 15% of time is allocated to monitoring the CSGOLD system and supporting the integration of new systems and equipment. Daily system checks confirm all Carolina Card and access control devices are online and functioning properly.
- Technical Troubleshooting and Customer Support — Approximately 10% of time involves responding to and resolving technical issues related to hardware, software, and access systems. The technician researches and diagnoses equipment malfunctions, communicates with vendors and contractors for resolution, and assists with problems related to meal plan or door access operations.
Education and Experience
Requires job‑related accreditation from a technical school or an applicable skilled trades program and 3 or more years of job‑related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job‑related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
- Ability to establish working relationships with users, vendors, and office staff.
- Familiarity with or ability to learn how to install, maintain, repair, modify, design, and test card readers and other related hardware.
- Knowledge of office automation standards and microcomputer hardware and software.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, be multi‑task oriented, and conduct ongoing follow‑up on tasks and projects from start to finish.
