We are working with a mid-size, Columbia, SC based, boutique law firm having offices throughout the South Carolina, as well as in Charlotte, NC, and concentrating on construction law, real estate transactions, corporate transactions, mortgage banking, creditor services, insurance, health care law, and related litigation. The firm seeks an experienced Construction Defect and Insurance Defense Litigation Special Counsel (7-15 yrs.) who can lead complex, high-exposure construction defect matters, including multi-party cases involving general contractors, developers, and upstream parties, as well as insurance defense matters across multiple lines, including construction defect, premises liability, products liability, professional liability, and transportation related or other complex liability matters.
Expected compensation is $160,000-$170,000/yr. Benefits information is available from the employer. Expected billables are 1850/yr. The position is onsite in Columbia or Charleston, SC, but remote in Charleston, SC, until the firm acquires a larger office in that city.
- Lead complex, high-exposure construction defect matters, including multi-party cases involving general contractors, developers, and upstream parties.
- Serve as lead attorney on insurance defense matters across multiple lines, which may include:
- products liability
- professional liability
- transportation or other complex liability matters (as applicable).
- Develop and execute overall case strategy from inception through resolution, including:
- early case assessment and exposure analysis
- discovery, motion, and deposition strategy
- trial and mediation positioning.
- Handle advanced motion practice, key depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
- Act as the primary point of contact for carriers, insureds, and corporate clients.
- indemnity, additional insured, and risk transfer strategy
- settlement posture and authority strategy.
- Ensure compliance with carrier guidelines, budgets, and reporting requirements.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop associates.
- Provide quality control and strategic guidance across matters.
- Support training initiatives and knowledge sharing within the practice group.
- Exercise independent judgment on complex and high-risk matters.
- Balance legal risk with practical, business-oriented solutions.
- Anticipate client and carrier needs and proactively manage exposure.
- Contribute to practice development through:
- client relationship growth
- thought leadership and mentoring.
- Significant experience in construction defect litigation, particularly GC-focused matters
- Meaningful exposure to other insurance defense practice areas, such as premises, products, professional, or transportation liability
- Proven ability to manage high-volume and high-exposure dockets
